When I try to turn my engine over it makes a poor attempt and then just makes a fast clicking sound, is the clicking the starter solenoid? do i need a new starter motor?

probably not, most likely you just need to replace a contact in the starter. These are expensive starters. Pull off your old one and take apart the soleniod and take a look at the contacts one side usually get worn out first. The contacts are available from the dealer for like $12 I think.

that is a great site with some common problems and a good walk thru on the starter problem.
Best of luck and let us know how it works out!
