What's the best 944?

Can someone here tell me what model 944 is best?

What are all the different models?

I know there was an 8 valve, a 16v and turbo. Is there others I missed?

Which model works best for auto-x, what works best for road racing, ect.

I know the '83's are good and light but a little low on power.

I've heard the turbo's have too much lag.

Any help will be most appreciated. :feedback:
Cheers.

random thoughts, all IMO

83's make some of the best autox toys. The only place where manual steering can be a friend. (most 83's have manual steering , just to warn you) the trannys on all base models are "weak" for hard shifting/starts and expensive $400-1200 to replace. The engine costs $$$$$ to upgrade but the suspension is where the cars really shine.

16v "S model" cars are rare. have turbo tranny, few upgrades,

83-87 models have mostly the same 2.5 motors
89+ models have a 2.7 motor IIRC

Turbo lag can be compensated out and the turbos are VERY modifiable (hint, hint, street racing) the trans is also alot stronger for handling hard launches.

If money was no object I would get a turbo S, but those are rare and fairly expensive (in the 944 world anyway) For n/a's I have an '83 and enjoy it. For regular turbos I would get an '86 because they were a little lighter; and like 83-944 said, it isn't that hard to get rid of some of that lag with a little bit of money.

I wanna get a one of the 16v's. Natural aspiration is a must. Not sure what colour though. However the 8 valves in the earlier models, like in my friends '83, are much more pleniful and cheaper.
I want one that would be good for a daily driver ( I can stand driving around with "alterations") but also be good for AutoX and drifting. So that would lead me over towards the earlier model.
Uuugh, it's too hard to decide, but something like an '83 sounds like the right one to get. I do like the fact that they're good and light.
