I JUST BOUGHT AN AUTOMATIC 02 EXPLORER 4X4 WITH 16000 MILES ON IT. I CHECKED CARFAX AND INSPECTED THE CAR PRIOR TO BUYING. AFTER A DAY I NOTICED FLUID ON THE DRIVEWAY. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER AND IT WAS THE TRANSFER CASE LEAKING TRANSMISSION FLUID. THEY REPLACED. PRIOR TO TAKING IT TO THE DEALER ON 2 OCCASIONS , WHEN STARTING IT FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THE AM, I WOULD SHIFT INTO REVERSE AND IT REMAINED IN NEUTRAL. I THEN PLACED IT IN DRIVE AND IT WOULD ROLL BACK. AFTER 3 OR 4 TRY'S IT WOULD SUDDENLY WORK. IT HAPPENED TWICE IN 1 DAY AND THEN IT WAS FINE FOR 2 WEEKS BEFORE IT RECURRED.I TOLD THE DEALER AND THRU SOME SNOOPING FOUND THAT THIS WAS A PROBLEM REPORTED BY THE PREVIOUS OWNER. THE TRANSFER CASE WAS OVERTIGHTENED WHEN THEY TRIED TO FIX IT BEFORE I PURCHASED IT. THEY REPLACED THE TRANSFER CASE AND I WAITED TO SEE IF THIS WOULD TAKE CARE OF IT. A WEEK LATER IT HAPPENNED AGAIN. I WAS STUCK FOR 20 MINUTES AND IT WOULDN'T MOVE. I TRIED PUTTING IT BACK IN PARK AND THEN DRIVE. i THEN TURNED THE VEHICLE OFF, RESTARTED AND PLACED IT IN FIRST, SECOND AND THEN THIRD. STILL NO LUCK. FINALLY IT KICKED IN. FORD IS SAYING THERE ARE NO CODES PRESENT AND THEY SEE NOTHING WRONG WHEN THEY INSPECT IT. THEY CLAIM I WOULD NEED TO HAVE THEM TAKE THE VEHICLE FOR A WEEK IN THE HOPES THAT IT WOULD OCCUR BUT WON'T PROVIDE A LOANER EVEN THOUGH ITS UNDER FULL WARRANTY. HAS ANYONE HEARD OF THIS PROBLEM IN A NEW EXPLORER? ANY IDEAS? THEY TRIED TO SAY OH WAIT UNTIL IT GETS WORSE AND THEN WE CAN IDENTIFY IT.

I think you have a transmission problem.
Go to Auto zone for a free diagnostic test, and take it from there.
good luck.

wow, what a bad experience you've had. there are many parts in a transmission;some electronic and some not.
you should bring it to a different dealer . they should take it apart and see whats going on inside there.

I know from experience the tranny fluid level on that is about a 3 hours process to check (dealer only) and I know that Ford has had to send a TSB out on the proper way to check it. Because many were doing it wrong!
It could simply be a fluid level issue.
That is crap about no loaner.......had mine in probably 8 times at end of warranty for torque converter, fluid level, various shields, etc...every time got a loaner without asking!!!
