I have a 94' Thunderbird LX with a 3.8 motor and a automatic transmision. The transmision just went out. It will go in reverse all day long but not any of the forward gears. How hard is this to rebuild if I was to get the rebuild kit myself? PLEASE HELP!! It started about a week ago and I changed all the fluid and filter then it ran fine for about a week and went out again. I changed all the fluid and filter again and this time it will go in reverse but not forward. Fluid smells burnt. Time to rebuild I guess.

It's really not worth your time or money. If the fluid is burnt, your grinding gears which is very very bad. The bands are probably worn out as well which means OD is shot. Your best bet is to go to your local auto dismantler (Pick-n-Pull/Pick-a-Part is a gear heads play land) and pull one out of a 94-95 bird for a direct swap (use a 96 or 97 if you can find one, might need a little fabricating, not sure). But that is the easiest, cheapest, and effective way to handle the situation. I had to do the same last summer, bought a 95 AODE tranny w/>80,000mi at PNP for $250 (how much was the rebuild kit again? lol)

I think the 96 97 should be a direct fit, but I'm not sure, but I would do like he said. A lot less pain!

We went through 3 so far on our Firebird so there's always a risk buying used. But most yards will back up their sales with a limited time replacement.
