An interesting article on street racing, placed in Stuff Magazine.
http://www.autothority.com/magazines/stuff.htm
Here's a quote:
"Everyone's trading Camaros for Civics because you get major horsepower with minor engine work," says 23-year-old Dustin Worles. Translation: It's easier to hop up a Mazda than a Mustang-and you get the extra juice of blowing away, say, a loaded muscle mobile with a cheerleader's Civic. Ali's four-cylinder VW has readily whupped ass on six-cylinder turbos -and nearly taken out a supercharged Mustang V-8. "[That guy] had to hit his nitrous to beat me," Ali says.
...and it goes on. I would like to hear everyone's opinion on this article.

Its a lil bit innacurrate and shit, but its fairly well written...i liked it ha ha....expecially this:
"This is a very expensive hobby," he explains. 'I know a guy who lived on instant noodles for six months so he could save up for a turbo upgrade on his Supra."

sound's like they talked to the guy's from teckademic's the yellow mx6 and then hiding in a back lot covered by cardboard *which they did in the 1st teckademic's video. now that I look at the date If you watch the 1st teckademic's video you can see the whole story basically on tape. and metro *the nickname for the dc streetracing spot* is still like that now, it was shut down with speed bumps but now it's back open, havent been up there in awhile but im sure it still get's hott. the MD/DC/VA street racing scene has very very fast car's and big money races.

So wait....."everyone's trading Camaros for Civics because you get major horsepower with minor engine work"? Excuse me, but it was my understanding that you have to put MORE money into a civic than a camaro to get it to go faster, no? What tha fuck does this sentence mean? Also, his "VW" almost took out a Supercharged 'stang WITH nitrous?
So in other words his VW kept up with a nitrous-fed, blown, V-8? Somebody please correct me if i'm wrong.

Why couldnt it?
You dont know what he has under the hood.
You dont know how well either of the two drivers can actually drive.
You dont know shit other than the Mustang had a v8, sc, and Nitrous.

"Everyone's trading Camaros for Civics because you get major horsepower with minor engine work,"
No, not everyone is trading Camaros for civics...that's just an ignorant statement!
So what if you get major horsepower with minor engine work? Do the same things to the Camaro as the civic, it'll be cheaper to do, and it'll STILL be a faster car.
Where do they come up with this crap? The F&F craze has made some foolish people do this, but i think anyone with any sense (unless they want a change of vehicle or become a fan of the import scene) would keep a Camaro and do as i stated above.
Sorry for the late post, i was taken aback by the dickhead earlier.

How naive do you have to be to see that almost any civic racing a camaro at street races is going to lose. And if you did put the same money into them you'd definantley get more out of a v8. F&F has really brainwashed some people. As for everyone is trading camaros in for civics. Even if I had my car turbocharged I wouldn't hesitate to trade it for an SS camaro. I'd like to see that vw beat the supercharged mustang, with nawwwwwsssss .

You guy's might feel alittle stupid right about now.
The article was written in 2000, The Fast and The Furious came out in 2001.
goto the eip tuning website uncle ben's and look at some of their vw's, they do that kind of work on alot of people's car's around here and there some some vdub's that roll around that are crazy fast. yes faster than a mustang.
you guy's are totally off for price. how much does a camaro cost and how much does a civic cost? I spent around 2250 total for my car and everything and Ive taken out my share of z28's and trans am's, keept dead even with a new srt4 and beat/hung with various other fast car's. find me a lt1 or ls1 camaro z28 for 2250$ and then we will talk and still then he will pay way more for insurance than I ever will

Granted there are vw's that are very fast, majority of mustangs will smoke vw's. I don't think you see very many of these vw's at street races either. People are also talking about trading camaro's in for civics, and making faster cars out of them. To me if I had a nice camaro already I would sweat the insurance, and keep the camaro instead of trading it for a civic. Low 13's with good tires are not hard to achieve with an ls1. The reliability of making the 4 cylinder as fast as a mildly modded ls1 would not be in my interest either. I'm not knocking small engines I'm just posting my opinion.

reliability? it's a honda! cant get more reliable than that!
people trade good cars for bad cars all the time, maybe they want a challenge maybe they are tired of their camaro.

yeah you wanna argue reliability, dont argue with honda. You dont see many 250k mile lt/ls-1's now do yah?

you don't see too many 250k mile engines from honda with 300hp either... ;)

Take into account I was talking about a turbocharged civic comparable to a mildly modified ls1. Atleast read my post before trying to bash me.

im not bashing anybody, I pointed out that honda motors are very reliable. As for reliability of higher hp hondas, most of the time when these engines blow its cause people didnt take the time to build them to take hte power. Its fully possible to build a 300hp honda motor and have it reliable, expecially with all the aftermarket support now-sleeves, rods, pistons, valves, blah blah blah

It stands to reason that the more horsies you're building the less reliability there is. Plain and simple. 8,000 hp drag cars go through an engine per pass or just about. Formula 1 cars (especially now with the one engine for race weekend rule) don't last much longer than the race weekend, and they're about as high-tech as engines come and produce about 900 hp at 18 to 20,000 RPM.
There's definitely a trend you see with higher hp = less longevity. So you can build a very sophisticated engine, build it correctly, and if it produces massive amounts of power... it's still going to fail sooner than an engine that's built correctly, is high-tech but doesn't produce much power. Hrmmmm talking in circles... sorry. :uhoh:

Interesting article. Didn't really say too much about reliability, but still a neat project.
I wasn't saying you can't have high power without some reliability. Just comparing high power/reliability with low power/reliability.
Hope I don't run across that guy. :icon16:

Very familiar name...
I think I read that article quite awhile ago. But anyway... my car is a daily driver too. So that doesn't really impress me. I drive "normal" so as to keep the gas consumption down and less wear and tear on the motor down.
Him running his engine hard on a regular basis and still retaining its longevity would impress me.
