Oil Burning Problem - Help!!

Hi everyone:

I'm a new owner of a 2001 X5 3.0. My engine seems to be burning through approximately 1Qt of oil every 4-5 thousand miles (mostly highway). Is this normal? Has anyone else heard of other folks having this issue?

Any help/advise would be greatly appreciated.
