Check Engine Light / Codes

Based on some previous discussion threads, I tried diagnosing the Check Engine light (by depressing the accelerator quickly 5 times). The code appears to be 1 and then 19. According to the codes I've seen, this doesn't make any sense. I have since diagnosed the problem as being the fuel pump fuse (or something fuel related), but I still don't know what the codes means... and it still appears when I drive the car. By the way, I'm also wondering how you clear the Check Engine light?

Thanks in advance!

quickest way is to disconnect the battery on these models for about 1 min.

Thank you! I will give that a try and see if the code still persists.

Let me know if you find a way to translate the codes but the check engine light is moreso emissions related. I left more details in your other post about the rough running and idling.

Thanks for your response. I believe some of the Check Engine codes can be found in Haynes or Chilton shop manuals and possibly even on this site. However, the code I found started with 1 and then 19... and this doesn't seem to make sense. My understanding is that the codes should be single digit blinking separated by short pauses. You then put the numbers together to find the code.

i posted the flash code procedure on the '5' series site and it'd take to long to show the translations but your correct, 1 & 19 isn't really a possible read-out. you might try again watching REAL carefully.

I just found this code activation/deactivation information on BMWE34.net (www.bmwe34.net):

1. Turn the ignition key on (without starting the car) and depress the accelerator pedal to the floor 5 times within 5 seconds.
2. The check engine light will remain lit for 5 seconds, blink off, light for 2.5 seconds, goes off for 2.5 sec. and will start flashing the codes.
3. Each code is separated by a 2.5 sec. pause. A 0.5 sec. blink then nothing means the end of the code reading. To read them again, depress the accelerator pedal 5 times again.

Clear the codes
1. Read the codes. At the end, make sure that the 1000 code (short blink and nothing) is present then depress the accelerator for at least 10 seconds.
2. To check, depress the accelerator pedal 5 times within 5 sec and make sure that the 1444 code (no fault stored) is present.
