I just bought an 1996 ext cab rado, I looked where I had it parked inthe driveway and then checked the vehicle. Looks like I have a leak coming from the rear main seal. Would this be a correct assumption? any advice fom the gurus here.
next, has anyone here ever had there rear main seal replaced by a shop? If so, how much can I expect to pay? If the job is not an difficult one, how long should it take? I an a immediate (low level) tinker in auto mechanics.

Thanks DL

If its the pinnion seal on the rear end you have to have an impact wrench to get the pinnion nut off. It took me about 2.5 hours including cleaning the punkin and replacing the seal. The seal is about $20.00

Now if you talking the rear seal on the transmission/transfer case that isn't much different, just messier. Either case make sure you mark your yokes position so you don't get a vibration after to re-install everything.

Good luck.

It's very unlikely it's your rear main your truck is a 1 piece rear main and not to prone to leak.Chances are it could be your iontake leaking down the back of the block or sometimes the oil filter adapter gaskets leaks up into the inspection cover of the tranny giving you the impression the rear main is leaking.Ihad one bite me in the a#@ one time I pulled the tranny only to find out it was the oil filter adapter gasket.Hope this help :grinno:
