Fan is not comming on except with a/c on. checked relay o.k. checked coolant senser o.k. How hot should car get befor fan kicks in? It has climbed to about a 1/4 inch past center (195) but never to the red. Runs at 195 or less on highway or with a/c on. ????????

I'm not sure of the activation temp of the fan, but you can short the plug to the sensor using ajumper wire. With the key in the on position but the engine off, the fan should come on. This will verify all of the wiring and plugs involved. If the fan remains off you will need to look deeper. If it comes on you may want to remove the sensor and make sure that it is clean. This is a very common problem if you have the red "Dexcool" type coolant. Good luck.

I also have a 98 Cavalier, 5spd. It has the exact same problem, and it has since day 1. I always thought the fan didn't kick in. But if you use the a/c or defrost to cool it down. Then, it's the same problem I have. I replaced the upper and lower hoses, coolant, thermostat. It made a difference for about 3-4 days. Then it did the same thing again. Mine only does it in stop and go traffic. I took it a good mechanic. He let it run for 45 min. The fan kicked on and kept it cool the whole time. If it gets a little warmer than I feel is normal, I turn on the defrost, it starts to go down in about 2-3 min. I've heard about a friend of a friend. He has a 98 Blazer, he had the same problems. He replaced the dex-cool with regular coolant. He's never had a problem since. I don't know if I recommend that. I think that year of Cavalier was just built that way. It's never overheated completely, never entered the danger zone. Just a little more than what seems normal.
