Steering Wheel Removal

I have a problem with the ignition switch on my 97. It won't go into the locked position so that I can remove the key. I suppose I need to remove the steering wheel to get the switch out. This is what I have read in my Haynes manual. I could sure use some advise on this before I end up with an air bag in my face.

2 screws behind the steering wheel hold the air bag on - anyone know what kind of head are on these, I can't tell?

Do I actually need to disconnect the wiring connectors under the dash that are connected to the air bag? I have the battery disconnected.

Any other advise on this topic would be helpful.

Thanks in advance.

i have a 96 Trans Am and i had the same problem. When i stopped and tried to get out the ignition was locked and the key wouldnt come out. i started to take off the steering wheel and disconnect the airbags as well, but when i was doing that, i noticed the fuse for the automatic starter was by the airbag connections, so i pulled out the fuse and put it right back in, and the car started and the ignition unlocked. so if you car has an automatic starter, pull out the fuse and then put it back in, or if you dont wanna do that, disconnectng the negative from the battery and putting it back on will do the same thing if you dont feel like doing it the other way.
