i was wondering if any one in this forum knows any thing about 87-93 stang AC. i have a 90 gt with absolutly no freon in it. does ne one know a good method to check for freon leaks without having to put a gallon of freon in it to run the dye system? i took my car to a shop to see if how muhc it would be just to get it fixed and the total price was around 600$. i told them to eat my ass and left. the machanic told me that they would have to put 2 gallons of 97$ a gallon froen in just to run the dye system to see where the leak was comming from. fix the leak. and covert it to the new style of freon..then out 2 gallons of the new freon in. if i could just find a way to check for the leak myself i could do the convertion kit for 40$ and have a buddy of mine hook me up witht he freon. anyone have ne suggestions on how to find a freon leak for my AC thanks

Hey, im not sure with those styles of mustangs to find a leak. I would put freon in it and just buy the kit and fix it yourself but i dont really know. I have a 68 stang so its different than yours and its easier. But if i was you i would fix it yourself, i would costs less.

If you have a vacume pump, pull a vacume on the system and se if it will hold it or not. If it will not hold a vacume, It will not hold a freon charge.

Remember you have an r-12 system, you can not use the little cans of freon that they sell today (Unless you have converted over.)

Also to do a convert you need the AC gauges as well, not just the kit. I would also reccomend buying a new dryer if you are converting.

I did the 134A conversion on 2 of my Mustangs without any problems, or replacing any parts, A lot of the conversions kits will either come with a gauge to measure the refrigerant and a die leak detector. It's cheap and very simple.

Yea but you have to remember the Dryer/reciver is basically the "filter" for your AC unit. Also be extremely carefull on what kit you buy, most coming with an oil charge that will saturate your system with oil. The most oil you will recover from any system when you do the recovery is 1.5 oz then you go buy a canister with 12 oz of r134a (which in accuality is about 8 oz) and about 4 oz of oil. So you removed 1.5 oz and replaced it with four oz, and that is if you only use one can. Also alot of thoes cans have a propane charge in them the help the r134a get out of the can. Realllll bad if some of the propellent gets into your system and you have a leak. I am currently in an AC class that when I am done I will have to take and pass the ASE and IMACA tests to pass the class. I don't know it all but I have a big text book and an instructor that does. Anyone that needs help with ac just let me know.
