Hey, if you guys would ehlp me out, I would really appreciate it. I was wondering if any of you have ever done an SR20 swap into your 89-93 240SX. I am getting ready to do one, and I am very mechanical, but I just want to know if you guys think I should do it myslef, or take it to have it done? I will probably buy the whole front clip which is $1900 without shipping. Please let me know of your good or bad experiences with the swap and what you think I should do about installing it. Thnaks a lot. It is greatly appreciated. Later.

Well if you have all the tools, including an engine hoist, you might e able to pull it off. Also if you have an 89-90 there's some wiring complications with the gauge cluster, I'm not sure what the problem is though, iI think it's the tach that's not compatible or something.

yea, the 89-90 came with a sohc ka, so the tach doesnt work with a dohc engine

yea can buy a cluster from a 91-93 for like $60

You're also going to need power steering lines and resivoir from a 91-94. The FAQ (http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=92927&page=1) in this forum and the people at Heavy Throttle (http://www.srswap.com) will be glad to help you out on this.

poor blokes in america.
our[ozzie], 240's (180sx's) come stock with the sr's and ca's.
just felt like boasting :icon16:
and even though the sr20 is an exceptional motor, GSR2NR94 have you considered dropping in a rb20det. They got some balls and do really well dropped in a 240.
For the swap, I'd recommend having a shop/good mechanic do it for you as the wiring is an absolute beyatch. Heck I know mechanics that have to call in electrion's for this stage. Once the engine's in and wired up you should be able to do the rest [eg, fmic, bleed valve, exhaust, extracors, etc].
p.s: I see no 180sx forum so I geuss I'll chill here, in which case Hi to all!.

It sounds like you are not a certified proffesional, and so if something goes wrong I doubt the warranty will work. So you should take it to a shop.

A person who works their ass off/saves their money for something they want, deserves a nice car as much as someone who could have done all that work themselves. You think money just falls from the sky?

There's a reason why the KA vs. SR threads have disappeared. Don't bring up this stupid ass argument again.

Just being nitpicky, but I hope you know that only the 240sx Hatchback is the American version of the 180sx. There are plenty of legal swaps that you could do to a 240... American V8s, (RB26DETT... unconfirmed, but if Motorex can legalize a GTR, the engine shouldn't be a problem)

Back on topic, Jspec already mentioned Heavy Throttle. If you go there, they have a complete write-up on everything you need to do for a SR Swap.
If you have the time, the tools, and the mechanical inclination or you're just feeling up to the challenge, go for it. If you have the money to burn, why not let other people who can probably do this better than you could, do it?
Positives of doing it yourself:
You'll know everything about your own car, so if something goes wrong, you can fix it.
You'll save lots of money for emergency use or a little something extra.
Negatives of doing it yourself:
If you fuck up your own shit, it's out of your wallet.
I've heard that most of the price in labor is wiring the harness, so if you could do that yourself if you opt to have a shop put in the engine, you'll save even more money.

this has nothing to do with money, it has to do with loyalty. if you go out and rent intial d and see an 180 wit an sr, and spend you money to go buy a 240 and have sum one put an sr in it, so you can so your a drifter, i have no respect for you.

The Initial D player who reads this:
Oh my god! Some guy on a forum has no respect for me! My life has no meaning! I better do exactly what he thinks is right so I can be accepted into his little world! Please, oh, please, i_need_a_240hb, forgive me for my mistakes! I'll pray to you, make you my god, just please respect me!!!!
If you have the money to have the engine installed then do it, then yiou won't have to worry everytime you drive it about something going wrong. If you can't afford it then you can try it yourself, but it's the person's choice and I doubt they'll answer like our little friend up here. ^^^^^

thats not what i meant, i want people to be edjucated about cars, if everyone does everything for them, how will they learn, im tired of people asking dumb questions.
logik23
06-09-2004, 08:56 PM
To learn they will have to ask dumb questions! There's a first step to enerything and you should be happy that these people want to learn. There was a time when you didn't know anything about cars, there was a time when none of us knew anything about cars and someone helped us learn more, it's our turn to teach them so next time they ask a dumb question, answer it instead of telling them to go screw themselves and look at the FAQ, even though they should have done it. :-P

thats the probilem, they dont look for answers they just want other people ti tell them. they should read the faq, but they never do

Mate... no offence or nothing but dont say something is easy and doable until you've tried it yourself.
Personally, I have done one engine swap where me and some friends decided to drop in a 4age into a corolla[87 model]. And yes we managed to some shit are self but when it comes to wiring, etc. you cant learn that shit from a book! fuck, we had to get a electrician to make sure the ecu, etc was connected properly. Not to mention placing the motor in correctly wasnt the easiest of jobs.
In the end if you got a lot of money and arent afraid to spend it, go to a shop. If you got a bit of money and some equipment do some work yourself then get it properly finished, eg get the technical work done by a electrician.
If you really want a project/pain in the ass do it yourself, and realise your gonna need time/money/equipment/most probably help and frickin pateince as you will go nuts when you realise you forgot something, etc.
whatever floats ya boat!
peace

That IS a better way... but with the forum up here, it makes it much easier to find what you need much quicker. That's where the problem with newbies expecting to be fed any answer they want comes... even with the FAQ AND the search engine! :bleh:
