98 Explorer turn signal not working

The problem is that the turn signal is not working. If you play with it the signal flashes some times, left and right, though not in
it's locked position. Started with a replacing the flasher and that worked for about 2 months. Now replacing the flasher does nothing. Today I went to a mechanic shop that said the multi-function switch in the steering column needed replacing. Purchased the part from Autozone and installed it in 15 minutes. That did nothing. Still no turn signal, yet the wipers and emergency signals worked. I am assuming that it is neither the multi-function switch or flasher. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions on what to do?

On another note if you do need to replace the turn multi-function switch do not take it to a shop unless they actually charge at the most
an hours worth of labor. It takes only 15-20 minutes to take out and install a new one. On this model Explorer there is no
need to remove the steering wheel or airbag to take apart the column cover.

Thanks.

I only have a hunch, so I'll pass it on. Do a search on what's called a multi-function switch, which is also on the column.

Well, I made a strange discovery today. What I did find is that I can get both
turn signals to light up if the brakes are applied at the same time. Not in their
locked positon, but if I hold them right before they click into place they come
on without blinking. If I do not apply the brakes the turn signal will not work at all,
no matter the amount of jiggling. If any one has an idea of how or why
the brakes are effecting the turn signal please let me know.

Thanks
