I have a 1990 Chevy lumina Sedan. The problem goes as follows: we drove the car and it quit. Thought, hey, might be outta gas. Put gas in it, started right up. Thought, stupid me. Approx. 3 miles down the road, it quit again, and was smokin real bad and stunk too. Had it roll backed to my house and looked underneath it. Oil from one end to the other. Changed the oil filter and put new oil in it to see where it could be leaking. Started the car, it ran for about 5 min. and it wont start again. Never saw any oil leaking and the car sounded fine.
:banghead:
Possible problems? I am not to fluent with all this electronic stuff.

!990 chevy lumina sedan. 3.4 liter auto. w/ a/c.

Thank you.

My opinion would be the head gasket went and anti-freeze got into the oil causing the major smoke and stench... any other opinions?

Ok. But wouldnt there be water/antifreeze in the oil? And the car should probably run real rough wouldnt it? If this is true, the car runs fine for the 5 minutes it runs. And the oil that drained out of it didnt have any alien fluids in it. i.e.-water, or antifreeze.

Got a point with the gasket. One of them went, sounds like, but don't think the head. Maybe lower intake? Something that's letting the car burn oil. Check your plugs for oily residue, but I agree its a gasket problem.

ok, but why wont it run for any longer than 5 minutes. This would really help in determining which seal went bad.

Just curious... have you checked your coolent level at all since this happened??

yes, radiator is full. I do have one small question. Yesterday when it was running the fan never came on. But the radiator wasnt that hot either. should that fan be on at a idle?

Do you have an oil pressure gauge?? how does it read???

No, this model only has those little things I like to call "idiot lights". The only guages so to speak are the speedo, and the fuel guage.

Just for the hell of it, disconnect the battery for a few minutes and restart.... see what happens when the computer readjusts.

Well, At this point, I'd listen to see if the fuel pump was working...

quakerboy

Yes it is working. I just put a new tank, pump, and fuel filter in it 2 years ago. Could possibly be the filter again....but why the oil, smoke, and stench? Stench and smoke was probably oil burning on the exhaust, possibly was the oil filter...
Think I should change the filter again?

not sure on your car but on my 93 lumina apv, i use a paperclip and then turn the key on and count the reps of the flashing light.

where do i put the paperclip?

Not sure if yours would work the same but in my lumina apv, you insert one end of the paper clips in the upper right slot and the other end will be 2 slots to the left of that. Nothing will be in the bottom row.

Once thats in, turn the key on (do not start) and count the codes (flashes)

You better do a google search though to make sure yours is the same... maybe someone else here can help on that.

No the fan should be temperature controlled, only comes on when it need to, or when the AC is on.

Starting and stalling problems sounds like the Fuel Pump, had similar problems with mine. But that shouldn't cause the smoking problems, if it was smoking from the tailpipe then its either oil or coolant getting into the cylinders. White smoke is usually coolant. If it was smoking from the engine bay then it could just be oil burning off the outside of the engine, the fuel pump might cause this if the fuel mix is lean then the engine would run hot and it would be hard to tell when you don't have a temp gauge.

I am really illiterate when it comes to this kind of stuff. I would just rather have a carberautor on it. And no dang computer. I did that with a Trans Am I had awhile back. Just wired everything up and slapped a carb an intake on it.

Anyway, i changed the tank(new), fuel pump, and ilter approx. 2 yrs. ago. Think it went bad already? Also i talked to someone this morning and he said it could possibly be the Ignition module and/or the Crank sensor. Possible?

Let me know anybody. And i really appreciate all the feedback I have gotten on this problem.

Thank you,

If it is a module as you mentioned above, you should be able to get a code reading. See if you can get a code reader from someone to check it.

As for fule pump going bad in 2 years... thats VERY possible. many fuel pumps only carry a 1 yr warranty... they do that for a reason.
