Buying a 91 Voyager

Hi everyone,
My husband and I are looking into buying a 1991 Voyager. It has 153,000 miles, but the transmission was replaced at 80,000. It is a luxury edition for $1100. Can anyone tell me any problems they might have had in the past with these vehicles? We've never had a mini-van and have 2 foster children being placed in our home on Monday. The extra room in the vehicle is much needed! Although we can't afford a new vehicle, we also can't afford a really cheap one that we might have to fix up right away either. Any help you can provide would be appreciated. Thanks in advance for your help!

I am having some problems right now with my 93 Grand Voyager SE, but I have always liked this van.
It was the first mini van I ever owned and now I can't imagine going back to a car! :disappoin
It was a little hard to get use to parking it as mine is the extended one. But one of the first things I notced when I drove it was how well I could see out (if that makes sense :lol2: ) When I drove the car after driving the van a couple weeks I felt like my butt was dragging the ground. (pardon language)
My transmisson was rebuilt about 80,000. And had some problems after that due to shop breaking a sensor during trans rebuild. But my problem was people related not so much van related!! During my research on these vans I have found transmissions in them are very tempermental and seem to be a poor point on them. However since my rebuild mine has been fine.
My van now has over 155,000 miles and I am having A/C and Radiator fan problems. Hopefully it won't take much to fix! I hope it will go many more miles but you just never know when they get this many miles on them.
Well didn't mean to go on and on.......hope it helped.
(By the Way I have 3 children so I needed the extra room also) You must be caring people to be getting foster children. Best wishes!!

I have a 1994 voyager with 227,000 mile on it. Trans was replaced at about 150,000 miles. Rides well, travels well, most repairs since have been minor and infrequent and never more than $400. Considering the fact that it is paid for, it's a lot cheaper than having a car note. The only problem I am having now is with the van overheating when it is idling for more than 5 minutes and it the engine stutters when I'm coasing at speeds above 40mph.
Best of luck with your purchase! With those probs, I still wouldn't sell mine any time soon.

By the way, I purchased my Voyager for $2,500 and I haven't regretted it (yet)

Hi Ddawn couldn't help but notice your reply. My 93 Voyager has just started overheating when sitting idle for a few minutes. As long as I am on the road it is okay. Hubby checked and my radiator fan isn't coming on. So apparently while moving the air keeps it cool enough but while sitting idle it begins to overheat.
We couldn't figure out why fan won't come on, so yesterday hubby rigged me a toggle switch to the radiator fan. So when I am sitting idle I just switch it on and the fan will cool it. I tried it out last night and it worked. Within a minute of flipping the fan on, my gauge started coming down. I know this isn't a recommended solution but we are short on cash right now  and it works!
If you happen to figure out what the problem is with yours would you let me know? Thanks so much!
I still love my van!!! :iceslolan

Update****
My problem: the wires that lead from the radiator fan are rigged directly to my battery somehow....the wire has a short in it somewhere....fan not working.....the wire (from the van) that it's supposed to be hooked to is damaged and needs to be replaced. The wires from the fan were hooked up somewhere else, but turned off when the van turned off.
A "certified" mechanic said the fan motor was fine but in order to "fix" my problem I needed a new fan motor (so that it would replaced the rigged cord)
According to him I can't order just the motor; I have to order the whole fan assembly.
AND THEN I needed to order a new wire/connector from the van to replace the damaged one........this would cost me $300-400...and is NOT guaranteed to fix my problem.
I had a "shadetree" mechanic rig me up a toggle switch so that I can turn the fan off and on manually (since there was nothing wrong with the motor itself) until I can get some funds (and a second opinion)
Let me know if you come up with anything.

I had a 1991 Grand Voyager that went 247,000 miles before it got that "deer in the headlights" look. Replaced the first tranny at 174,000. Next tranny at 240,000. Change the fluid and filter in the tranny every 30,000 and be sure to add the friction modifier. Ours had the 3.3 motor and used 1 qt. oil in 3,000 miles until her last days. Brake system is under a recall and some some of the more expensive parts should be replaced under warranty if you have a failure, normal wear parts excluded. We had ours repaired at 218,000 @ N/C. This was our second Voyager, we now have a '98 Grand Caravan. Best of luck!!!

I bought mine in 2001 from the proverbial Little Old Lady (in my case, man) with 39,000 mile on it. Love it! They're the greatest vehicles for all round utility ever. Mine's a four cylinder. I haul tools and kids and camping gear, whatever. I just don't go fast. I do have a weird problem, though. See my posting about my wipers and gauges working funny.

Hi Suzuki
I was curious about your posting concerning the brake system being under recall. (As I have begun having some brake problems) Where would I get info to see if my Voyager would be in the recall?
Thanks for info!!

Go directly to a Chrysler dealer and have them run the VIN number to find out if it is under the "recall". My system was a "high pressure" ABS system and there was only one mechanic in the Lansing area that was qualified to repair it. If I remeber it correctly, they rebuilt the pump and master cylinder. I don't remember if they had to do anything to the booster. We had replaced all the normal brake parts prior to going to the dealer. Our problem was inconsistent brakes. One time hard pedal with minimal brakes. Next time brakes worked fine. You never knew what to expect when. Because it is a "safety issue", they repaired ours without regard to the mileage and without cost. Good luck!
