87 Caprice brake light problem

This is driving me to drink. rear brake lights don't function. Window light is ok. Tried numerous things. Switch is ok, I get power to the trunk at all times. changed out two sockets. Changed the ground lug, all bulbs. tried jumpering ground and power right to sockets (bypassing connectors and connectios) no good. I have gotten them to work for a few days at times. I'm starting to suspect something in the directional circuit since they use the same filament and power pins. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also are there any sources on the net with schematics. I haven't found any. Thanks

Thanks CD, actually I've made some progress. It seems to have something to do with the steering wheel tilt position. I'll checkout that site.

Is your tilt loose? It could be a bare wire in the wires of the turnsignal switch - it could also be in the switch itself - have someone, or you, operate the lever - the lever may not be returning to center making the contacts in the switch not line up to get juice to the taillights. The also can heat up and the contacts sink into the plastic making it it not make contact that way too . . .

Thanks Lady, yeah could be anything in there. Most likely the switch. I'm gonna spray some contact cleaner in the switch and see if it helps. If not then I'll have to pull the wheel. Check out the Lumina board, I've been talking to some people there about this
