Fiberglass console modification question

So, I was looking at my console one day and I decided that it was in need of DIY Moding... I have never worked with fiberglass, but I have read a few "how to's" but I'm still curious for any help or recomendations. Here's the plan:

I stole this image from somebody (thanks) because I don't have a digital camera, but it helps me with what I'm trying to talk about. See the hole where the HU lies? It's like a big rectangle pit that maybe was fashionable in the early 90's, but I'm not for it. So, my thought was to simply raise the HU by molding a slab of fiberglass around the edges. What do people think? Any problems I should look out for? I was planning on glueing it in, I suppose, and maybe cover it with some vinyl? Or whatever people thinks looks good. Thanks for any advice.

I have no idea what you're talking about... I assume that by "HU" you're referring to the Head Unit, but I can't figure out what you mean by "raise"... so you want the head unit to stick out farther than it does by fiberglassing over the DIN hole instead of being recessed like the AC/Heater controls?

ci5ic I think your right......but.....I would simply get some 1/2" MDF.....trim to fit....and that outta raise it out....then wrap in in vinal......ald either screw it in from behind....or glue it.....I would glass it.....you wont get it straight.

Yeah, that was what I'm talking about. That sounds good, I don't know why I didn't use common since, heh.
