Recall notice

Got my recall notice in the mail today. According to the notice ALL 97 Auroras are affected by this recall not just part of the 97 production run that I had read about before. It also says GM will reinburse anybody who payed to have the fuel rail replaced themselves before this recall but they will only pay what it would have cost at a GM dealer.

well I had mine fuel rail repaired by Pepboys 3 months ago for $475 and they used the Nylon type tubing for fuel rail.

Now GM has the new one made out from stainless steel - the part it self its about $160

what should i do at this time? before they came out with the stainless type tubing i thought that i will take the the reinbursemant money and get some new tires. Now It looks line my only option is to take the money and change it myself.

what do you guys think?
should the GM reinburse me for part that is flowed by design and it definately bound to fail again in future....
along with free installation of new improved part?

If you go to www.nhtsa.gov and search for the recall, you'll find answers to all your questions and more. I couldn't easily cut and paste links to some of the pdfs there thanks to some java applets being used, but once you find the recall click on the document search button. They have 3 docs available. One is a prelim. bulletin sent to dealerships with a q&a section that answers most of what you asked (it doesn't sound like they will give you a new SS part, just reimburse you). There is also a really long one consisting of a bunch of faxes detailing how a dealership noticed a lot of leaks, the regional engineers checking parts orders and verifying a problem, the manufacturer using accelerated stress testing and making it fail, ect. Intersting stuff really.

I was confused to find out that my 95 was not included in the recall for now, even though a GM representative said that it was made with the same nylon tube. I did an inquire with GM and here is the email they sent back to me to update me on what will happen with the 95 models. So for you 95 owners we will have to wait for a while yet.

Thank you for contacting the Oldsmobile Customer Assistance Center. We appreciate you taking the time to write us in regards to the fuel rail recall on some Oldsmobile Auroras. At this time, a recall covering the 1995 model year Aurora has not been released. Recall 04014, currently only covers the 1996 and 1997 model year. There are plans to extend the recall to cover some the 1995 model year Aurora's, once parts have been made available. Owners of affected vehicles will be notified via mail. The letter will be sent to the addresses of owner's that all local DMV's currently have on file. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us again.

If you should need to contact us in the future, simply reply to this message with your service request number, 1-224517956, or call our Oldsmobile Customer Assistance Center at 1-800-442-6537. Customer Relationship Managers are available Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., Eastern Time.

Again, thank you for contacting Oldsmobile.

Sincerely,

Zack Sonneborn

I tried to call my neighborhood Olds dealer and he said that they no longer serviced Oldsmobiles. I called the 800 customer service number and I got the number of a dealer that is about 45 miles away. Nice service! Once you buy it it's your problem. I guess I wont be going back to them for another GM product.

I stopped into the local Chevy Dealership 2 miles away from home and asked them if they would be able to handle the Recall. Was told that only Oldsmobile Dealers can handle warranty work. If it was billable to me - then they would do it. Once Olds is officially out of business, then it won't be a problem to have any future work done at a sister division dealership. So it's a 1/2 drive to the nearest Olds dealership...

The '95 will be included when there is sufficient inventory of fuel return lines. They are being replaced (along with the fuel rail) on the '95 model year only...

Well, this is a side effect of the shutdown of Olds. Not too long from now, there won't be ANY Olds dealers. If your dealership sells other GM cars, they'll be able to service your car, otherwise it was very appropriate for them to send you elsewhere.

Personally I'd take the car to a Caddy dealer first, and maybe a Buick dealer if I was desperate. I wouldn't let a Pontiac or Chevy dealership touch my car unless they had sold Oldsmobiles at one time, because they don't have the experience with the G-body chassis and NorthStar engine that the Caddy guys do (Buick G-bodies are the Riviera and the Park Ave, though they don't use the same drivetrain, obviously).
