97 Auto Gear Shifter Question

I'm trying to replace the portion of my console that has the gear shifter, ash tray, cig. lighter in it. I've been unable to remove the top (knob) of the shifter to replace the console. Again, it is a 97 automatic. Any/all suggestions or tips appreciated.

On the back side of the knob is a C clip (towards dash). Use a small screwdriver to pry it out and the knob comes right off.
