i dont have that problem with my focus (thank god) but it sounds to me like the gears in your tranny arent placed right. Has this happened ever since you bought the car? if you hear that grinding noise..ur probably grinding your gears away...so you are breaking your car :(

Hi... I was trying to find out on the same issue. I just bought a Focus 2000, and I've started to note and get very annoyed with what I'd say may be the same transmission noise problem you've got. It seems as if there was something loose someplace... I'm definitely not a mechanic, so I have no idea what it may be. I'm taking the car to have some pending recall issue done (something un-related), but I'll try to find out with the mechanics if they know about this also. unfortunately, I'm over the 50k warranty :( ... But this is quite annoying, I hope it's not a major issue... I just bought this car!

I have a 2000 Focus that has had SO many problems since I bought it new in Sept of 1999 that I have almost lost track... but I think this has taken the cake!
Yesterday I went to leave in it, and it would NOT go into REVERSE.. so we rolled it out of the driveway, and I discovered that it WOULD go into FIRST, and SECOND... so I had a very fun drive this morning before work driving my car to the dealership in SECOND GEAR... luckily I was able to take back streets, and the dealership isn't TOO far from my house. I had a couple down-hill stretches where I coasted in NEUTRAL for a little bit:)
I bought the extended warranty, and I have just over 48,000 miles on my car. The dealership said that if it is the clutch, then that is a maintenance item, but that they would call me later when they find out for sure what is going on. The clutch seemed to be working FINE to me, and I have been driving a manual transmission for 14 years.
Should be quite interesting to see what BOB ALLEN FORD says about this one... we bought both cars from them.. and I did not want to take my car here, because last time my car was in this shop, someone stole all my cd's and a radar detector out of it! They didn't want to reimburse me for the items at first, but eventually they made good.

I will post later when I find out the outcome!

Tahk you man, i dont think that the clutch is gone on my car but sometimes it doesnt go into gear so well so imthinking that the gears arent placed correctly, Mine goes into the dealership today at about n00n and it is underwarentee so after i find out the outcome i will also post back. :\

I called a transmission shop that I have used before on previous cars when I have had to have a clutch replaced, and he said that this does NOT sound like a clutch.. that it sounds more like a transmission, linkage, or cable problem...

lovely.... hoping its covered...

well I went by the dealership on my lunch break, and it looks like the ol ESP program is going to come into good use after all this time... looks like they are replacing my transmission!? They were waiting on a call back from ESP with a decision on whether or not they were to replace it with a NEW or REBUILT transmission. The service adviser told me something about one of the gears.. but I don't recall the specifics.. and don't want to post misinformation.. so when he calls later.. I will get the specifics, and post an update...
I think I am selling this car.. I am fed up.. whats next?? Is my engine going to blow!?
I can deal with a lot.. my 1991 Honda was STRUCK BY LIGHTNING while I was DRIVING.. and I brought that car back from the dead.. but this Focus has about done me in!

Thinking back on my car.. I had that problem too.. and I now know what is wrong with my transmission... the INPUT SHAFT is bad. I guess they need to replace my transmission as it will not go into anything but 1st and 2nd. I used to have trouble getting it into either REVERSE or FIRST after removing the emergency brake, I would have to let my car roll a little and then it would usually go into gear.. and the dealership said for the part that is bad.. that made sense...
Good luck..

Yes mine does that too, but it is just the heat shield around the exaust pipe. There are two metal plates, on on top and one on bottom of the pipe. You can do one of three things. 1) Tie it up with thin metal wire or cable, or 2) stick a claw hammer in between the shields and pry them open a little bit or 3) Take it to a shop and have a new exaust system intalled. I chose option 2 for now and it is fine now. My old honda did the same thing, but way worse than this.

my car got a new transmission.. the "input shaft" was bad.. I got my car back, and now the "factory rebuilt" tranny makes a whining noise.. so I took it back and asked for some cheese with my whine!
AARRGGHH.. I would like to let them keep the damn thing.. when I went to pick it up it wouldn't start.. they forgot to attach the GROUND WIRE to the engine! DUH.. ya think that is important!?? I almost lost it! Is this "heat shield" a maint. item??

they called me yesterday and said the WHINE noise is NORMAL, and there is NOTHING that they can do about it PER FORD.. that ALL the MANUAL transmissions do this!? I don't believe it.. I called FORD's 800 number and filed a complaint last night.. they told me not to do anything else until I hear back from them today.. well my car made a decision FOR me today on my way to work.. my throw bearing and pressure plate went out.. it sounded like my car was blowing up.. I drove it into the dealership handed my service adviser my keys .. and told him to GO DRIVE MY DAMN CAR.. it sounds like it is going to blow up now.. you said the WHINEY noise was normal.. I bet you are going to tell me THIS is normal too, right!???

well guess what.. they fixed the pressure plate and throw bearing for free.... even detailed my car, so it is ready for me to sell:)
The technician drove it home for the night to make sure it was working right, and was able to make an "adjustment" to the transmission, and this whining noise that there was "no fix for per ford" is no longer there.... I find that pretty interesting myself since they said all the other transmissions make it.. and now mine sounds just fine! What a bunch of bullshit! I think they are bent over the table here.....anyone want to buy a focus.. I have one for sale cheap! Most parts brand new!!:)

Well Nose-Gobblin-
I have been away from the boards for a few months, and have been pretty worry free in regards to my focus as I decided to sell mine! I had enough. The day I decided to accept the offer that Car-Max made me.. I noticed that my car had developed of all things an OIL LEAK! I was so sick of that thing.. I just took it in to Car-Max and said here ya GO!
I picked up my check for a little over 1100.00 more than what I owed on the car, and walked out the door with a huge smile on my face, and a huge weight lifted off my shoulders!
I thought I would check back in tonight to see what kind of progress you have made with your car! Looks like you have gotten along pretty well! If you have any questions feel free to email me.. I have all the invoices from my car.. I can tell you what all they fixed.. and I was also told by a trusted source to sell my car while I could.. or actually take the money and run, that ford knew about all the problems that I had experienced already, and that there were more coming.. so I took that advice.. and I ran far, and I ran fast...and I never looked back!!
We decided to go without a car payment for a while, and purchased a car from my inlaws really cheap in order to save some money to buy a vehicle that I really way in a couple of years!
Now, don't get me wrong.... the NEW Focus is fine.. (although I wouldn't want one!)it was just the 2000 model year.. and I learned to never buy any first model year vehicle no matter what.. I just won't do it!
I wish you the best of luck!
