Prime, spray, clear. Thats pretty much what I do, as long as the rims are already "metalized".

primer seems to ruein my paint job on the wheels and the body, gives it an orange peel look. or am i primering wrong? are you suppost to put the can of primer on warm water befor using it?

I airbrush, but I heard warm cans spray better. Use Tamiya Primer I barely get orange peel.

i typically use duplicolor products (being a wal mart employee does have its benefits. 10% off!) i use their primer and top coats. i started spraying the hood on my vette 3 or 4 days ago. i polished it today and looks pretty dang good with out a clear coat.

If the wheels are chromed strip them with ovencleaner as other strippers do not take off the clear coat under the chrome. Another tip, I always rotate the wheels as I paint them by putting them on the end of a long stick, this ensures even coverage. I use Krylon white primer and gloss white out of the can and get very little if any orange peel. I always wet sand the primer coat with 2400-3200 grit cloths. If doing any metallics primer is not really necessary and airbrushing is best.

I use different techniques, but the main rule is to use primer if the plastic is in a totaly different color than the asked for. On my Taisan Card GT2 I only masked of the rims and sprayed Humbrol gold and brused on Microscale's gloss coat in the center parts.
