Had one that my mother bought new when I was 15. I bought it from her when I was 21. I don't know why Chevrolet never put a TPI 350 or 305 in one. The new SS's are an insult. They should at least put in the supercharged 3.8 don't you think?

I'm glad someone said it. They are an insult. From time to time I get to see a Monte Carlo from the glory days of when it was a kick-ass ride, with a simpler, more business-like body style, twin exhausts, and of course, a really mean sounding V8 underhood (one of the best-sounding engines ever IMO).
The least they could do would be to give it the supercharged 3.8 used in the Grand Prix GTP and others, but the car as is represents a mockery of the great car it once was. One of the things GM should do to give its corporate image a shot of "espresso."

I own a 2000 Monte SS. The car is beautiful except for a couple of things. #1) its front wheel drive. Nothing is more aggravating than a car that pulls to the right when you hit the gas. #2) it should have a scaled down Vette motor in it.
I owned a 87 Monte SS for 4 years til it got stolen. Those cars were jipped on engines also. That weak 305 would get beaten by these foreign jobs running 4 cylinder turbos.
Rumor has it in 2004 the Monte SS and Impala are going rear wheel drive and the Montes are getting a new body style in 2005. I think the current Montes look great, they just need rear wheel drive and a v8.
Anyone else heard about the rear wheel drive rumor?

You guys are kind of funny. The SS (G-bodies) may not be a rocket ship, but it isn't a tobaggon either. The 305 HO puts out neccessary power. It has Camaro cross-fire heads and an L-89 Corvette camshaft in it. Including a corvette catalytic converter, and a camaro chassis. It puts up a fair fight to it's primary competition of the time, the Buick Grand National. Infact with just a bit of work, it can beat one. The only faults of this car is the bad air intake, the typical bad valves and seals by GM, and the amount of gas it chugs. My SS treats me fine, although it is getting a new engine after this winter, probably a 350 Ram. It is dissapointing about the new SS's on the market though, with the 6 cylinder engines... the car still puts out 230 horse though doesn't it? If Chevrolet had decided to put a v8 in it though, they probably wouldn't had made it much more powerfull anyhow, as Chev has a policy that nothing will ever be faster than their icon, the Corvette. But yeah, an eight cylinder would have been nice, since they are way easier to get parts for and upgrade for the auto enthusiasts out there. Maybe 2004 will have it then... :smoka:

Actually I got rid of the Monte Carlo a couple of weeks ago. Along with the aggravation of the front wheel drive, the steering was making weird noises and felt wierd when I would make turns. So I did my civic duty as an American and went out and bought a 2002 Camaro. Now there's a v8 with rear wheel drive. hehehe. I like it so far. But i will consider a 2006 Monte if they make it rear wheel drive.

I have always been a fan of the late 80's SS. There is a white one for sale down the road from where I work. T-tops...65k. I think he wants 6,000.00 for it. If I had the room in the garage it would be mine.
The SS ranks in the top list of cars I will one day own. Also up there are the 83/84 Hurst Olds and any of the 85-87 442 Olds. I also would like a gray or burgendy T-type to go with my GN.
Ahh....so many cars....so little space.

I've been the proud owner of a 84 LS(non SS) for 3 years and I've loved evefry minute of it. The only thing i've disliked is the extremly weak 305. I've run a best et of 17.6:mad:. I'm currently thinking about a 400hp 383 stroker swap that'll make that biotch scream.
I dislike the rear and tail lights of te new Monte. It broke my heart when they switched to the FWD 6 banger motor set-up.
If GM does decide to go back to the V8 RWD setup... I'll garuntee yoiu that I'll be the first one in line at the dealership :D

The new MonteCarlo is one of the ugliest cars thereīs in the market (not an opinion but a fact) along with the Toyota Echo and Pontiac Aztec. The front-end remains me of the one of a 1996 Hyundai Accent, and the back is just awfull. Of course I liked it before when it was based in the Lumina. By the way congrdulations if you got rid of it and got the Camaro, the Mustang has much more interior room but oh well.

I like the Cavalier! Try a 1997 4door Red Cavalier LS, pretty cool. Too bad I canīt get one from were I am
Iīve tried one like the one mentioned when one of my aunts crashed her car and the insurance company gave her the Cavalier for a while (she has a Ford!!) !!
Anywise for that time it was a cool car, and I donīt like much the reestyling they introduced to it in 2000, it looks too cheap now!

I agree, Scott. I am dissappointed with the new Mone Carlos. They have a great style with a NASCAR backround, and they made it a piece of junk. Changes are definitely needed.

Those actually didn't run bad if you took off the cats and the other 150 lbs or so of the emission control devices. Re-jet the carb and tune the engine up. One of the main problems with the 305's were the small valves(1.84 1.50) in the cylinder heads(74cc i think) they just couldnt breath enough.

Yeah but a monte carlo with a 5.7L V-8 would be something. Or maybe not quite that big. As long as it has a V-8 in it...it would be on bad ride. Maybe this will happen some day.

The best would be the original and first one ever made...1970 SS 454 of which about 2000 were made. The optional engine had either the 360 orr 390 HP 10.5 to 1 piston ratio. I have owned mine since 1971 after the original owner blew the engine and the dealer installed a vet 390 HP engine. I rebuilt it entirely 30 over, 12 to 1 and back then it ran 11.3 in the quarter. I am currently redoing the roof as the vinyl top got water under it and started to rust. It has been parked most of the last 20 years and has just over 68,000 original miles. The AC is absolutely cold and the body style still is sleek. These are selling anywhere for $12 K for bad, rusted old 350 non SS units up to $30,000 for all original matching numbers. Some days I just love to jump in and punch my 800 dual pumpers ... of course that takes my mileage to about 4-8 MPG. These were great cars and there are few left.

I just bought an '87 SS for my 16th birthday. It was deliverd on the 4th of July to my house in a covered trailer. Way to celebrate independence, right? Well anyway, I was wondering if anyone would have any information on a custom intake job. I was thinking about removing the 2 middle headlights and replacing them with 2 intakes. If anyone has done this, knows someone who has, or knows where I can get any information on it at all, please let me know. Thanks guys/gals. :evillol:
Also, FYI, my dad works for the public works around here and apparently our police department has a problem with smashing the crap out of their cruisers, so they average a 350 police interceptor every couple of months, if anyone knows anything about a swap for my Monte, that info would be appreciated also.

I did a costom job on my 87 SS. Its a cold, ram air induction. run one pipeline from the intake down to right under the front end, or take out the turning signal. At the end of the pipeline, make a scoupe. From the other side of the air cleaner box, cut a hole and route another pipeline to the other side. It works pretty tight, but stay away from deep puddles of water. Just go to the hardware store and see what you can come up with

they have put the supercharged 3.8 in for the 2004 SS Montes. I have just bought one and it is awesome. I have beaten up on a new 04 4.6 mustang stick, it was just a regular GT,and several jap jobs. I would put myself up against a cobra just for the hell of it to see how it goes, . I still have not gone to its full potential as it is still being broke in but after that I would take on any one in a race. If I lose then off to the after market shop.

Just got my Dad's 1983 SS. It has exactely 1,326 miles on it. he bought it new and only drove it 3 or 4 times in 20 years. It hasn't been started in 15 of those years. What needs to be done before I bring it home? It is being towed to a garage. Thanks.
