Best Motor... I think I found it.

alright I think I figured out how to build the Best motor.

you start with a B20 Block and shave 8.4mm of the top of the block
you get a B17 Crank and B20 rods (pistons of choice for application)

and head of choice

this will give a 1.689 Rod/stroke ratio and a displacment of around 1.85L

best of all most of the parts are off the shelf parts... other than the block having 8.4mm machined off of it.

What about engine management - ECU? And what is the "head of choice" if this is supposed to be a specific best engine setup? b16a? b16b? b18c1? b18c5? Which cams? ..you left a lot of gaps.

well the perfect bottom end, this way if someone wants to use a b20 head, they can, if they want to use a Vtec head they can, and the ODB depends on the car it's put in.

this is basicaly as close to the 1.70 perfect rod ratio on can get with off the shelf parts.

yeah i think your choices of heads/setup is pretty much limitless. With a rod ratio like that, revs will come freely and vtec can be used w/o problem. what type of revs do you think you could get outa it Kunundrum?

why not just get a b18c and bore it out to 84mm then you would get more displacement then your project.

but anyways your rod ratio theory is just a theory, i mean show me any proof that it has anything to do with making power or hurting hte motor ?

and the perfect rod ratio is 1.74

Why shave that much off the block? As mentioned above just start with a B18C, or sleeve and bore a B16A.

You would need to shave the block in order to keep the Compression at a reasonable rate.

without taking the 8.4mm the compression would be around 6.4:1

That's not the point I was trying to make.

There are plenty of ways to build a great motor that don't involve mutilating a block, other than boring or decking. You could start witha B16A block, get all you specs and have custom length rods made.

And are you trying to base the shaving of the block on deck hieght, or rod lengths?

OK, i just got the B17 crank off ebay and Im wanting to put it into a B20 block. has anyone done this/????? I wanna know what its like. if that setup with a VTec head would be anything like a Type R engine, like HP and torque line characteristics and such. anyone? anyone?
