both stock
66 thunderbird -auto 390
66 mustang-auto 289
'66 Mustang is around 2,800 lbs.
'66 Thunderbird is around 3,400 lbs.
I guess it comes down to which engine was better. I know the 289 Hi-Po engine was potent... but it was also rare. Would come down to too many factors really.

Hey i got a 68 stang 302, red with black top. I probably would have to say that i think it would be a close one.

Mustang has less weight but also less motor.
T-bird has more weight bur more motor.
I think it would be a very close run.

yeah, but 390s weren't known for their power.. You can beef one up with excellent result, but from the factory they were somewhat lack-luster. Then again the regular 289 wasnt anything to call home about... But I'd have to go with the less weight, Mustang.

I know the '68 289 had about 200 hp and a lot of torque...up near 300 ft.lbs I think, and it had some kind of emissions thing on it that wasn't on the '66, so I'd guess the '66 289 would be running about 220 hp? and the 390 would have over 300hp, probably. so...it's a question of power/weight ratios. I would put my money on the 'stang, personally, because the gearing and suspension would probably be tuned more to a racing spec. of course, if it was a high performance 289 (one with a four barrel carb and intake) it would have about 270 hp (which is ford's official hp rating which is probably lower than the actual rating) i would definitely say mustang. this is all assuming both cars are stock.
