I built the first one of these before ford announced the new GT40. It was put on display at a hobbyshop, then stolen from the shop. This is the second one, it was so cool looking i had to do it again. Wheels, of course, are from the AMT copperhead. I known they seem overused these days, but they were the perfect look and the diameters were the same as the stock rims. Everything else is stock. Paint is Rustoleum metalic black, topcoated with Tamiya Clear (spray bomb), and lots of BMF. Interior is flocked and BMF'd too, and I added aftermarket seatbelts I found in my parts box.

Damn! You're right: those rims fit perfectly this model!
+ bmf on the windows trim looks quite nice!

heres the only picture remaining of the original build, I liked it better with the bellytanks chromed out, but due to fit issues with the older version of this kit, i wasn't going to deal with shoehorning the chassis in around the bmf AGAIN.

  Don't you feel the chassis looks hot, even without its body on? Don't mind the blur, I love this pic!

That looks great. Which kit is this? I was thinking of getting one and building it stock, like a street car, but I want an engine. My LHS has 3 around 50usd a piece, so I don't want to cut up a 50 dollar model to put an engine in it.

Looks great. Great build. The BMF looks a little rough in some areas, but I understand that stuff is way hard to use and get perfect.
Sorry to hear someone had to steal your first one.

This is the old Fujimi GT40 MK II kit. The new kit (MKI) has a 2 piece body, and Historic Racing Minitures in MD sells a transkit that works with either. I've been told that since the MK I tooling came out, that the MK II was retooled to a 2 piece body but haven't seen one in person yet.
HRM transkit:

I don't have an address for them but I believe RMOM is selling their stuff.
fantastic-plastics.com based in PA USA has 4 different GT40 kits in stock for $30 each. He carried quite a bit of imported and domestic kits, including some OOP MPC kits.
I wanted to keep mine simple and sleek. I think sometimes having opening panels (especially if they don't fit right) distracts from the lines and feel of the model.

Can't say I like the BMF around the windows, GT40s are race cars and didn't require the niceties of chrome trim :) Other wise it looks mean in black! Were the rear wheels much of a squeeze?
As far as I can tell the Mk II bodies are still a single piece, as I prefer it for curbsides. I'm on a bit of a GT40 trip at the moment. Statring out with a 1968 Gluf liveried example. I've also got one of those engine kits on order, should arrive soon. I'm of the understanding it is a 4.9 litre with Gurney Westlake heads, so will won't really be accurate for a Mk II.

Well when I was building this, I was thinking along the lines of the GT40 MKIII. Which were street cars made from extra MKII's as I understand it. They floped on the selling table though... too pricey I guess. Now the MKIII's are somewhat of a collectors item, saw one go on ebay last year for about $125,000. Leaving the trim black looked too dull, I needed the trim to add some contrast and black & chrome always go well together. The wheels were a perfect fit, heck even the offset was perfect. the ONLY problem i ran into was that the axel diameter was just a hair too small but wraping some tape around the axel fixed that.
If I had $65000 to dish out, I'd have ERA build me just like it, chrome and all.
I've researched the cars a bit but not a whole lot, my interest ends when it goes on the track. I'm a drifter and to me, oval track and drag racing is pretty darn boring, thought I love the smell of nitromethane and burnt rubber on a sat afternoon. In my opinion, this just free's me up to be more creative and less of a critic.
I have a full scanned article on the history of the GT40 (MK I to MK IV) complete with tons of color photos. If you want it I could get it to you somehow, but uploading it to here would not only be a legal issue, but the PDF's are big

Gt40's weren't designed as oval or drag racers, they are circuit and road racers! There entire reason for being was to conquer Le Mans, that they did with style. They were sucessful on the banking at Daytona a few times so maybe they were oval racers just a little bit :)
Of course, as you say, these days the market for replicas snd modern rebuilds is pretty healthy so anything goes. If chrome is your bag, you pays your money and tick the boxes!
The PDF file sounds interesting I am eager to learn all I can about GT40s.

On this subject does anybody know of a site with a complete listing of all the Fujimi GT40 kits? They have released an awful lot of different variants.

Who says GT40's didn't have chrome?
I like this better, though. The MkIII remains the only true street GT40 (and no, I don't count that replica Ford is pushing on the world now) but this look at what a MkII street car would be like is coolness personified. Rather have one of those than a Pantera, no doubt.

Never liked the Mk III. Too garish and fussy compared to the functional racers.
I had forgotten about those ugly chrome bumper things
