Hey, I know alot of you guys think im a little cocky with my win against a wrx but i wanted to find out really how much an import can put out. Here is the experiment i need one volunteer to pick a base model import car and then put $8,000.00 worth of mods into it to see how much horse power you can get out of it, now i dont want you to go buy the car just look the stuff and post back with the brand name, model name, and how much horsepower it will add. If you want to at the end you can put how much added up horse power all together the car will make. Now for you people that say this is completly stupid all im trying to do is get a better insight and respect for imports, think of it as a chance to share your knowledge.

Easiest way to do it is just get a 90s gsx and pump 8 grand in it... you'll be in the 10s.

Somebody from DSMtalk.com ran 12's with only 700-dollars invested in his Eclipse turbo.
Don't know about exact power numbers, but I guess they were "enough".

yea 8'g into a dsm you will easily see 11's and 400+whp no problem the stock turbos on the 1gen dsm are good and flow to about 20psi, the motor can take up to 22psi on stock internals the real mods to pay attention to on the dsm is the exhaust which is very restrictive, and the fuel and adding more air and keeping things cool. the 1st gen dsm have a better motor design more free flowing head and beefer connecting rods i belive and the turbo system is better the 14b is better then the t25.... turbo imports take well to mods.. i think if you put 8'gs into any turbo car you can see easily 150+whp gains.. i spent about $500 in mods to my little probe and im getting a estimated 25+hp and with a chip and a manual boost controller i can easily see 75-100whp gain and that will cost less then $300.. turbo cars are easily tuneable.. but the thing when tunning any car is how realible they become that is the realy chalange is to make a realible sport car with spending only 8g's in mods.. it can be done..

1972 Datsun 240z... throw $8,000 at it and it'll straight embarass Ferrari/Porsche owners all day long.
Probably be a low 11 second car, that can handle with the best of them. And be daily driveable. Probably have enough left over to get a decent paint job to look shockingly nice while toasting the unsuspecting opposition.
My plans are secret as of now... so no ideas from me as of yet.

Hmm... bench racing... :uhoh:
A local guy that owns a shop ran 9's in the 1000ft (should be an 11 second 1/4) with $1,200 invested in a FWD 1st gen Eclipse. $1,200 includes the purchase price of the vehicle mind you. He eventually got it into the low 8's (easily a 10 second 1/4) and still only had around $5,000 total in it.

I've got only $700 USD worth of mods on my car and it runs flat 12's in full showroom trim. Give me $8k USD and that'll put me into the lower 10's easy.

I'd use nitrous. You can get stupid size solenoids and nozzles to give you stupid increases in power. I mean you only have to run it a couple of times no one mentioned reliability or longevity

I'd say 8 grand into a CRX...they way nothing so the power to weight ratio will make it fast as hell.
I'd rather see you put the cash into a 5.0L Mustang for example, but that's just me.

They bought a 1990 Plymough Laser RS-T from a goodwill store for $500 and have stripped it and wanted to see how fast they could go for reallllly cheap. So far the price, including the cost of the car, is $3285.59. And..... they have went 11.839 @ 117.78 in the 1/4

If the work is done right, 8 grand in almost any car will get you at least into the 12s. A dsm is one of the cheaper ways, but by no means the only one. A crx hf with a custom turbo'd b18b (ls engine) will hit 300 horsepower easy, 400 if you want to push it. And that's in a 2000 lb car.

oooo you could buy a lotus/caterham 7 kit car and put a Suzuki Hyabusa engine in it. I'm sure that would shift quite nicely.
note - Theoretically i would win :o

thanks for the replies guys, i never knew you could get that much power out of an import, ive grown up around muscle car lovers my whole life and they absolutely hate imports and im trying to get a love for both sides. I just wish one of these days i would see one of these cars on the street, that would be nice.

Glad that you're open minded. More people need to be that way..
And dayam, that turbo Laser is amazing! Makes me want a DSM.

I did some number crunching and if my tuner were to tune it for free the nearly 8K USD or 14K NZD I would be able to reliably net around the 650hp before it gets a whole more expensive having to do more for supporting it. This is including labour to do the work.

This is pathetic put 8 grand into an older corvette you can run whatever you want. Swap engines, turbos, superchargers, etc. With 8 grand in most cars you can make them as fast as hell. This should be the end of this conversation.

Before I wrecked it I had an old 89 s10 blazer. I had a 350 and a transmission to drop in there with free work... that would have been one fast blazer with 8 grand of mods...

My friend you can make anything fast just drop a v8 in it and fix the suspension. check this out http://www.ford-v8-focus.com/
It may need more than 8 though.

Not if you did all your own fabrication. You could actually pick up a small block chevy long block for $800, an old turbo 350 tranny for $500 and a GM 10 Bolt for $150 if you shop around.
The most expensive part of the conversion would be the custom driveshaft and having the rear narrowed. Still for all the parts you're way under $8k.
But, you would really have to have your @$% together as a fabricator to make it drivable.

BTW, I bet you didn't know that the fastest, and quickest production Ford ever, was a 4-cylinder car, did you?
Too bad it was never offered in America...would've hurt sales of their "muscle car", the Mustang.
Ford RS200 EVO (http://www.fast-autos.net/ford/fordrs200evo.html)
