Cleaning up the Intake

Anyone remove that huge plastic box over the air filter? I put a K&N on there and I noticed that that box appears to by-pass the air filter in addition to taking up alot of room and complicating things. Anyone know what that thing is for?
Anyway, I removed it and need to plug the hole it left. Any suggestions? Duct tape is my temporary solution. The guys over at the Impala SS forum actually use a hockey puck or buy a more aesthetic plug for their intakes. The big black box on that car is just a resonator, I guess it might just be the same on the TB. TIA

I noticed the same thing on my 2003 TB. I took off the cover to run water through those holes to see if it really did bypass the filter.
The water stayed in the seperate compartments so I don't think it bypasses. I would like to know why the heck their there then.
Good luck
