ok, this is my first attempt at some of this scratchbuilding. up until i found this forum my builds were box stock. i am attempting a c5 vette. im putting a cage in it, opening the doors and trunk. the motor is a stock car motor with the Ls1 injection grafted on. the seats will be from the amt FnF supra. that is about as far into the planning stages i've gotten. im stripping the old paint now. i've got some pics, but all i've got is my camera phone so they aren't the best quality. im gonna try and post these. this is my first time posting pics on a board. the probably wont show. so i'll need some help. but here we go

this is one shot of the hood which is the color of the car and the roll cage.

this is the motor and drive line. it is a small block from a monte carlo stock car with the ls1 plenum grafted on

got it now. i found GT mikes tutorial. they turned out much better than i had expected. the color on the hood is medium red pearl by duplicolor. it is a toyota color. oh progress on this is slow. i go to school and work full time. i am taking summer classes to try and catch up. plus with gas prices being what they are. the funds to buy scratch building materials just aren't available right now. so im doing what i can. since those pics turned out pretty decent (right?!?) I'll try and get some pics of some of my completed models tomorrow as long as weather permits.

thanx. im hoping that it will be nice tomorrow. i dont work, all i've got is class. hopefully i can get all the body in primer. and get a good pic of the color on that hood. im shaving the handles, embelms and gas tank door. just for a clean custom look. this will be a long project just cause time restraints. i've got to come up with the cash to get some styrene. i was originally going to turbo the motor. but i dont beleive there will be room, plus i'm having trouble finding some aluminum tubing to make them. so i'm just gonna plumb in a bottle of nitrous. just looked at that 350 tpi. and i want it. as soon as i get the cash it'll be sittin in that vette. well its bed time i have to be up at 6 30 to get to class. only gives me 6 hours for sleep

i really like those old torque thrust wheels. just not sure how they would look on a c5. where did you find them at?

my local hobby shop carries them, but I found them here: http://www.pegasushobbies.com/ just click around for there wheels.
question, can you snap a pic of the duplicolor paint can and cap and tell me the serial number on it? I'd really like to use that for my 57 chevy project. Check it out the threads name is: More American Muscle~in progress.

I have a pair of the torque thrust's and I would say they would look very tiny on a Vette, They are only about 15-16" rim's.

thanks 97EX. I appreciate it. I might use a black or dark red base primer for the paint since now, I want a deep lucious dark red. Thanks again. The cage looks pretty good too. BEst of luck.

the only other wheels i have from the civic are the factory ones. glad you guys like it so far. it'll probably be a couple weeks im thinkin on that motor. got to see how my funds play out here in the next couple weeks. i also got to get some styrene and putty so i can make the hinges and what not. hopefully tomorrow, i will be able to get the final primer coats on the body. and have it painted by sunday afternoon. cant really do much with the interior until i get that styrene to make the door sills. im also workin on a pair of nitrous tanks to mount in the trunk. they ought to make that 350 TPI scream. i think thats about it for now. anyone got any more suggestions?

When i want to windowshop for wheels and such, I go to japanese sites. THe site with the most pictures is www.hlj.com though I've had issues ordering from them and I known other unhappy modelers online who have dealt with them in the past, likewise i've spoken to some who's had a plesant experience. I prefer to order from http://www.rainbowten.co.jp/ they don't have alot of pictures but will send pictures of any product you request a picture of. The customer support and communication with rainbow ten has been top notch and very timely. prior to the anthrax scare, it took only 4 days by EMS or AIR to arrive at my house in western maryland and shipping on 3 or 4 kits is usually only $16, the models are cheaper meaning that even after shipping a order of 3 or more models is cheaper then buying them in the states or on ebay. The site does feature LOTS of pictures though including ALL models currently available in japan and quite a few that are out of production, wheels, metal mufflers, GT wing sets, and a slew of aftermarket products available to the japanese market.
Additionally, there is a relatively new resin company in maryland called Historic racing replicas. they offer transkits and resinkits. A complete cobra daytona, corvette grand sport roadster, GT40 detail set to open the engine bay, and a C5-R detail set. These look like plastic, don't be fooled by the pictures, it's white resin
pictures at this link is the C5-R parts.

well progress is slow. it rained last night so it is pretty humid out. not gonna get a chance to get the paint on the body today. so im looking at somewhere around wed. before it is ready for pictures. im about to start the lowering job on the chassis. hopefully i dont completely mess it up. this is my first attempt.

ya. i dont have the luxury of a digi cam. but i am really surprised at the way they turned out. i dont know how to change the size tho. i've been away from computers so long, shy of just surfing, i dont know how to do all that stuff. it's been raining here for almost 2 weeks strait keeping it really humid and it is hard to lay good paint in this weather. and i havn't been real motivated to work on anything else with the kit. i'm gonna try and get some done tomorrow. i need to do something to relax and releive some stress. i think that will be just the thing

well. i didn't want to totally destroy my c5-r to get the motor out. i um, on the other hand, um. hehe. did find an old viper model!?! that i had been broken from all of my moves. i pulled the v-10 out of it and set it in the vette. tell me what you think

heck yeah.....i am workin on the front cross member right now. gonna have to cut it out and fab a new one. the motor sat too high to clear the hood line.
white97ex
06-13-2004, 10:40 PM
well so far it hasn't been too bad. had to cut the whole middle out of the c5 crossmember and i put a stip of styrene in its place to mount the motor. not 100% realistic, cause in real life it wouldn't hold the weight of the motor. but for the model it should do. put a stip in to support the trans as well. im about to start on the viper rear-end install
white97ex
06-14-2004, 01:03 PM
made some more progress today. i finally got the chassis painted and semi detailed. have yet to mount the rearend. i took apart the viper motor and repainted it. i matched teh intake and valve covers to the body. all that is left of that is to re assemble and then snap some pictures. i should have some, some time tonight
white97ex
06-14-2004, 01:46 PM

I'm following it! The new choice of wheels look great and the viper engine looks right at home in there.

06-16-2004, 01:37 PM
i had to completely cut out the front cross memeber. had to glue in a stip of styrene. but yeah it looks like it was made to fit. i am learning a lot trying to fit the suspension and axles. i went about assembling this thing the wrong way. i will be better prepared for the next project. im gonna take a nap and let the glue and paint dry and hopefully it wont be too fragile to work with when i wake up. and nothing has shifted
white97ex
06-16-2004, 07:10 PM
well i've pretty well got the chassis. i got the exhaust mocked up and the pipes are drying. they are straight pipes. with Stock Car side exits, coming out right in front of the rear wheels. the motor is mounted. there is a lot of front suspension missing simply because it wouldn't fit :grinno: and i didn't want to hack it up and re fab it all. im so ready to have this one done. im having trouble with the paint. it keeps fogging up cause of the air outside. all that is left is to get the interior done. the nitrous tanks and plumb the lines for it. not sure what im going to do for the intake yet. there isn't much hood clearance. well here is a pick of the underside of the chassis with the exhaust mocked in place let me know what you think.

well. after having hacked up the interior tub. im thinking i might have to order a new one from revell. im not having a whole lot of luck mocking the styrene up to fill the gaps and make it look good. plus i dont think i am ready to tackle such a big scratch building effort. i am staying way too busy with school and work. im gonna fiddle with it through the weekend. if it dont get much better. im gonna go back to the full tub and re attach the doors with some styrene.
white97ex
06-22-2004, 11:29 PM
i havn't worked on this in a while. i think im going to reatach the doors. i dont think im skilled enough to tackel the hinges right now. im going to try to hinge the trunk tho. hopefully i'll have a little time tomorrow to get the interior mostly done, and it will be nice enough to get a couple good coats on the body so i can get that finished and the doors back on. then pretty much all that will be left is deciding how to do the intake and mount and plumb the nitrous
