^^^ i would agree. currently almost my entire interior is ripped out of my car..why you ask : i'm wrapping my own seats, making my own shift boot, wrapping door armrests and center console armrest, and painting plastics... everything is going to be OEM honda charcoal and light grey ... no ricey gay colors

define ricey gay colors

^^^ sorry, maybe "ricey gay colors" isn't the proper thing to say. but basically anything flashy or gaudy, like a fire engine red, or bright blue, or yellows.. those are pretty ricey. (imo)

i know a lot of ppl use those for show cars and thats cool cuz thats what they are meant for.. to attract attention.. and attention at a show is a good thing.. but for a daily driver... its a no-no

can I ask how hard is it to remove to door panel to wrap the armrests?

lkailburn

hmm, well for mine: not hard to remove the door panel from the door. some screws by the speaker, the door handle etc. once you have the door panel off.. for me: i have to cut off the plastic "rivets" to remove the armrest part. then pull off the cloth(or i guess you could leave it i'm not sure) apply some adhesive, wrap with new material. stretch and pull tight, trim excess, put panel back together with self threading screws(gonna need to be fat and short to thread into the plastic cylinders which used to be the plastic rivets we cut the tops off earlier) and washers. then reinstall the door panel.

i'll be doing this in the next week or so. and i'll deff take pics.

what steps should u follow to do the platic parts and the vynil parts of the dash, whats the diff?
I have many people telling me to prime, some to just use dupli-color, some say sand it, whats ur advice?

lkailburn

well.. you can't do any of the those you mentioned for the vinyl.. the vinyl is wrapped over part of the door panel.. for that you would have to use a vinyl dye(which i'm to worried about doing myself.. if you were brave you could try it.. but buy some vinyl and try it on that first) or you could re wrap the vinyl in color of choice.

as for the plastics:
sand with 600 grit,
wash with soap and water
let dry
clean with rubbing alcohol
let FULLY dry
spray on plastic primer(its a primer made specifically for plastics to help hold to the plastic)
LIGHT sand with 1000 grit(plastic primer recommends only one coat of primer. so you must sand lightly here)
wipe off debris
5-6 LIGHT coats of color 15-20 mins apart
wait atleast an hour after
wetsand with 1000 grit
clean off debris
let fully dry
5-6 LIGHT coats of clear coat 15-20 mins apart
let it dry for 24hrs
wetsand with 1000 grit
clean off debris
wait atleast 3-4 days
rub out with polishing compound then with rubbing compound.

thats how i will be doing mine.. once the shops down with the sunroof, and once i finish my suspension install. then on to the interior i'll go!

Is all good, but y are u sanding after everything, i heard that if u sand the plastic, it can scratch it. My friend says that u should just buy the duplicolor prime and color, and clear. He said not to sand anything, just do all of the other steps u mentioned but without sanding, what is ur opinion on this?

lkailburn

^^ if you don't sand the plastics.. the paint wont stick to it at all.. you sand the bare plastic with 600 so the primer can grab on..otherwise it will all just chip off.

everything else is wetsanded with 1000 grit so the end product is smooth

i haven't personally used duplicolor paints... but from my knowledge and the general census.. you must sand the plastic or the paint will not stick

so ur saying to sand it with 600 first, then put the primer on, then sand with 1000 the primer, and then wash again, then add the paint coats, then clear? and also, have u done this before, or is this just ur theory?

lkailburn

^^correct except after you sand the primer; i just wipe it clean with a rag. but i do wash after color sanding and sanding the clear.

i have painted many things and i've also read many posts about painting.. this is not my theory..just common knowledge

y would u sand the color or the clear?

lkailburn

to achieve a very glossy/wet end result.

please note you are "wetsanding with 1000".. so your only taking off a very small amount off the top.

have you ever painted anything before?

ive painted my house, but that doesn't have to do anything with cars lol. the thing is.... when u are wet sanding the color, isn't that gonna make the color dull, and besides, Y would u sand the clear coat, i always though u needed like 2-5 coats of clear to give it that wet look.

honda--yes painting a house and painting car parts are COMPLETELY different. when you wetsand.. its not like you are sanding all the coats off ! you are meerly smoothing the coat out. personally..sometimes i colorsand, sometimes i dont....but i ALWAYS wetsand the clear coat after.. if you really want that wet gloss look.. you need everything to be smooth and even..so thats why you wetsand. after you finish wetsanding the clear coat..you give it 3-4 days to cure some more.. then you use a polishing compound and then a rubbing compound.. if you've done everything right.. you'll have a very wet looking peice :)

this is about the only pic i can find right now. but it shows stuff i've painted.: mirrors, side mouldings, side skirts(repainting those sometime cuz i'm unsatisfied with color match)
