Knocking sound under hood

This morning my car was making a knocking sound (fast and kinda soft but loud enough to hear from inside the car). When I'm facing the car, the sound is coming from the left front of the car, by the belt... Can anyone let me know if they know what it is and if it is something I can fix on my own? The auto shops here in Hawaii charge an arm and a leg for labor... just last month I chaged my radiator with my boyfriend and saved $300 in labor charges... Any help would be truly appreciated.

i know its an old post but its still an issue on older 3.8l.
apparently the wrong clearances were applied to main bearings at factory causing the knocking sound and result in piston slap/knock. almost any "knocking" is related to main bearings. (i know i had it on a taurus)
solution..let-it-be, let-it-be, or if it annoys you drop oil pan and replace all the bearings.....USE haynes manual ! (:
