Bad Tranny or Not?!!!???

Have a 93 SHO (Yamaha 3.2) AX4S. Drove fine for along time. Now every gear including Park and N are forward gears. I believe that the forward gear is 2nd that it is in. (ALL THE TIME). Could it be anything other than just a bad Trans? I would like to check all options prior to the $1600.00 rebuild job.
Any input would be apreciated.

Check and see if the gear select lever (cable) is loose on the transmission. On my 97 The lever (cable) is right on top of the transmission, I'm not sure on your year. Can you start the car when the shift lever inside the passanger compartment is in any gear, or just park and neutral?

The cable is ok. When I start the car it lurches forward since it is in some gear 2nd I think. However the car wont start in any position only
P, N, . I was told that it could be an electrical problem.

Does anyone know if the valve body would cause this to happen or if the trans filter is bad?

The first thing...This is not an ATX tranny. Its an AX4S.

If it pulls forward in all gears and binds up in reverse then...Then foward clutches are "welded" together. Hence, cracked forward "aluminum" piston.

The "MLPS" is a good thing to go after too.

Also, you can try this, pull the tranny electrical connector off the top of the tranny. If you now have forward, but sluggish,(3rd gear start) the geartrain(within tranny) is melted.

Thanks for clearing that up for me wasnt sure. Pulled the connector of the top of trans and it makes a kind of mesh grinding sound, metal on metal would be about right. However does drive in 3. MLPS? quick where is it?

Its basically where the shift cable hooks to the tranny. Its black with a plug-in faceing towards driver side of car.

How do you check to see if it is bad? Just replace it? I have unplugged it while car is running and tried it. Still nothing, get a new one?

I don't think its the MLPS if its making noises. This would indicate a mechanical malfunction within the trans.

Maybe
