check engine light

I have a 97 ranger that had the check engine light come on. I went to auto zone and they said it was a code p01443 which I know could be the gas cap and I checked the seal on that and it looks good. Does anyone know what else it could be and if I may be able to fix it on my own? I am in a bind right now with cash and don't know a lot about cars.

It's a good chance that it's a vacuum leak somewhere. I just had the same code & it was the hose going in/out of the carbon canister (below battery). Does the truck run any different? You can start the truck & sray carb cleaner on vaccum hoses & if idle changes, that's where your leak is. Good Luck!

Is this your code?if so start checking for a vacume leak. hoses, evap service port and sensor(on drivers fenderwell behind brake lines)large line to tank.

I also have a '97 and have the following three codes:
P1443 (Evaporative Emission Control Systems Control Valve)
P0171 (Too Lean Bank 1)
P0174 (Too Lean Bank 2)
Is this likely to be vacuum leaks as well?
Thanks.

P1443 is probably vacuum leak.
PO171 & PO174 are bad 02 sensors. check out this link http://www.rangerpowersports.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=109108&highlight=p171

The problem is probally your 02 sensors, but don't forget some models had 4 of them, you will find 2 more around you cat. converter, check those also............Good Luck.

I traced the vacuum line from the fuel tank to the vapor cannister. No apparent leaks - I removed the rubber hose section and checked it for leaks and found none. After replacing it, two of the codes previously reported are now gone:
P0171
P0174
so I conclude that the hose must have been loose at the fittings. Previously I had replaced the gas cap with no change to the code readings.
The P1443 code remains on.
Suggestions for the P1443 code?
Thanks.

I've heard the TPS & IAC sensors can cause that code, but not sure. I just got the code again on my 95 but haven't looked yet. I bet the PO171 & PO174 codes come back after time because from what I've heard they are O2 sensor codes, but good luck!

You were right about the codes coming back after about a week. I guess this means I need to replace the O2 sensors .... ???

I Had The Same Problem, So I Replaced The Sensors, That Didn't Fix The Problem. The Engine Was Burning Rich, "maybe A Sign That The Cat. Converter Is Pluged Up", So I Replaced The Cat. Converter And The Check Engine Light Doesn't Turn On Anymore.

Did you put in the CAT yourself? I do most of my own work, but haven't replaced a CAT in these trucks. Wondering whether it is welded or clamped in place and whether there is some other option for cleaning or clearing it. Last time I had to replace one on the wife's Explorer it was not cheap.

1443 is purge flow solenoid.there is also a flow sensor inline with it.replace em both.l71,174 could be the vacuum lin that runs into the air cleaner tube being off.

Having trouble locating the replacement purge flow solenoid and sensor through the usual internet parts outlets. Anyone know where I can order these?

I finally wrung this one out - Intake Plenum gasket was leaking slightly - not enough to really affect performance, but the slight vacuum leak set the sensors off.
Have 500 miles on the new gasket and no further problems so I am very confident this was the culprit.
