From skinny to BIG???

I'm really skinny right now and it's pretty unconfortable. Girls always tell me "you're so bony and skinny" like it's a good thing, it's insulting, but I don't say a word.
I really wish I did'nt sound like I was whining but I have to say it, I'm tired of bieng a skinny twirp, I need to get bigger. My question is, if I strart working out, will my skinny shape change, or will I just stay skinny but be more 'cut up'. What I'm tryin to say is, can I look bigger regardless of my small bone structure??? Thanks to anyone who helps out.

EDIT: I'm 5'11' and I weigh 135 LBS.

It really depends on how you exercise. I'm not a fitness expert, but in general, if you increase your intake of food and move some higher weights at reps you'll gain body mass.

Some people have a rocket for a metabolism and you might be one of those people. A friend here at work is like that. To help him gain some mass, he's been drinking slim fast between meals. Yeah - I know the name would seem to indicate that he's on a diet, but its used as an increase not as a replacement for any meals. Its working for him so far.

alright talk to me i have been and still in the situation u are - i have been working out for a long time and i cant gain a pound its so weird - i weigh 130 very thin only 5'9 but the strange thing is i can bench 235 pound with no sweat..i am very very srong but i cant gain any fat..by going to the gym 5 days a week for so long has made me mad cut - it hasnt made me gain any weight tho-its the fast metabolism my doctor says - and there is no way to slow it down except eating twice as much as you want too- its so hard but it works - in college i would eat till i almost threw up and i gained wieght - but take a week of from eating like that and you loose all the weight - creotine - give you water weight so dont bother with that cause if you also stop that for a week all the weight is gone - right now i am taking NO2 and i have had good results i am slowly gaining wieght but i am getting a hell of a lot stonger faster which is pretty cool. ( and when girls say ur skinny like they tell me just tell them its better then being fat like ur ass bitch) haha being skinny and strong give ya confidence as well cause you kno u'll fuck those dudes up if it came down to it -
-also drink protein like its water double the recomended intake which is equal to your body weight

- any questions dude PM me on aim

i wouldnt worry to much about your skinny-ness

fact is, in 30 years, youll enjoy it. just work on keeping yourself fit and healthy, and sure, the fotball players may intimidate you now, but that 50 inch chest of their will turn into a fifty inch waist sood enough :D

Don't remind me! The problems I fight are keeping the 52 inch chest and getting the waste back under 38 :banghead:

Dave's quick way to gain weight!

Tip 1: Have a lot of money
Tip 2: Spend that on beer, pizza, and fatty foods

Once gained weight, go to the gym and start body building, you'll turn that fat into muscle (or burn the fat and make muscle, how ever it works, i failed heath class).

To lose weight, just run/bike/hike/eat right etc. The gym will tone you up.

What you need to do is graduate high school. I can think of at least 4 people off the top of my head who were in your boat in high school, then they graduate and a year or two later, BAM. Weight piles on.
My husband is in the same exact boat as Yogs, and I'm hoping to get close to wearing my pre-preg clothes again. I gained 60lbs in 9 months, up to 186 (OMFG!!) and have lost 35 of that so far, in abt. 7 weeks. But I still have 25 lbs to go.

It depends on what you want to do. If it's just gain weight and be a lard arse, eat whatever and do no excercise. If you want muscle mass and definition the inputs are:
-Meals high in protein
-3-4x weekly HEAVY weights session. And I MEAN HEAVY. You will be sore as hell. Live with it if you want the results.
-High weights, highb resistance, low extended reps.

Boingo - can relate. In 12 months I lost 20kg (from 195lbs to 150lbs) or 88kg to 68kg. Would have lost close to 30kg of fat because I've put on a fair amount of muscle in the mean time.

Very impressive. :)
I haven't resorted to anything as formal as "working out" yet, but have been trying not to eat crap (esp. large quantities) and I've been doing a lot of yard work, digging and raking, etc.

I'm hoping that will take care of it, I never could even gain over 130 before, had a really good metabolism. If I have to though, I will actually work out.

Here's my outlook.

Go to a gym for three years, so you build some impressive muscle, whether you burn the fat or not (I didn't really- crap diet)

Then STOP going to the gym, waste of money after this point.

Move to Wellington, New Zealand- Live in Kelburn while attending Victoria University (4 papers per term= at least up and down a small incline 3 or 4 times a day) Walk everywhere with abs contracted. Walk to town once a day (Down steep hill with abs contracted)- catch the Cable car back up, if you can't be arsed walking back up the hill (But the Cable car is about $1 a ride, unless you have a $7.50 10-tripper.)

Eat two mid-sized meals a day (Breakfast is for losers) and about 2-3 Twix bars ($.99 at New World Metro) per day. Feel free to have BK or Maccy D's about once or twice a week. Do 2 dozen push ups a night, take the stairs where possible. Heavy drinking should ensue at least once a weekend.

That's managed to morph me into my current state of teh sexy.

I'm like 5'10"/5'11" and way 145. I'm skinny, but I've learned that I don't give a shit b/c I would rather be the way I am than way 300lbs. Take protein shakes and when you work out, use more weight with less reps to build mass.

Here's the plan I used to gain muscle and IT WORKS. I was always thin (150-155), but started this program and gained muscle pretty quickly. Now at 170-175. In 12 weeks or so you should see some noticeable results. I've been doing it for 3-4 years now and will never ever go back:

Diet:

Like OZ said, HIGH PROTEIN! 3 meals a day each with a good source of protein and some HEALTHY carbs (complex carbs). Grilled meats (especially chicken, turkey, lean steak) yogurt, cottage cheese, egg white omelettes, tuna in water are all good. I also eat lots of frozen fruit (much cheaper than fresh), vegetables, Grape Nuts, lentils for healthy carbs. No bread, pasta, cake or processed junk/ also no juices or soda (unhealthy sugars). In between meals (twice a day) have a high protein shake like EAS. Do NOT take weight gainer or meal replacement shakes. You want lean muscle mass from pure protein, not fat from excess calories. Also, drink tons of water- all day long. You need water to function properly and build that muscle. With the increased protein intake, it will also insure you don't get kidney stones. 2 glasses right when you wake up, 2 with every meal and 1 with each of your shakes. Sunday is FREE DAY- pasta, Burger King, soda etc...all the tempting crap. Pig out.

Workout:

Use freeweights! Nautilus and other machines are not as effective. 3 times per week alternating legs and upper body. One week you do legs twice, the next arms twice. You need to increase the weight in EACH set to build mass. So you'd do, say 12 reps at 100 lbs/ 10 reps at 105 lbs./ 8 reps at 110/ 6 reps at 115. Your last set should go back to 100 lbs and really crunch your muscles until you don't think you can do another rep. That "peak" of ultra intense effort at the end is what helps build muscle very quickly.

Check this book out out: Body for Life by Bill Phillips. If you do what he says, you WILL get bigger and healthier quickly. It honestly changed my life.

I've been eating high protein foods latley, and working out my arms/shoulders every 2 night...it's working! It's a known fact that progress is addictive, my arms are bigger than they were a month ago, and I find myself workin my muscles almost every night in an effort to be bigger/stronger.

I've kinda changed my mind. I don't really want to have a bigger body, I rather stay small and be strong with a small body. I have a friend (name is Roman) who is really big...tall&wide and he benches about 320 LBS, and he's got another friend that he goes to the gym with and this dude has the same bone structure as me and can bench 280 LBS. And my friend Roman told me that when his friend was in the 10th grade, he was as skinny as me right now. So this dude is really givin me motivation :lol2:

I bench 130lbs now, I wanna do 170 by the end of the year. I'll keep you guys posted :)

Why can't people be happy with their current weight? They are either too fat or too skinny.
Losing or gaining ten or so pounds is one thing, but if you put on fourty pounds in one year you could be causing yourself some serious health problems

*shrug* I actually think I look pretty good, but I'd like to not buy a bunch of new clothes, so the more I can get back into, the better. I have never been one of those "Oh, I'm so ugly, please somebody compliment me!" girls. Pre-pregnancy I looked good. I have a great rack and nice legs, just would like the belly to be a little smaller.
I am not one to crash diet either, I am losing weight nice and slow, since the last posting I've lost about 8 lbs. :) I am almost below 140. Goal is 130. And yeah I gained 60 lbs in 9 months (OMFG, still can't believe that) but I was knocked up.

I don't want to gain any weight, I just want to bench 40 more LBS than I do now (by the end of the year).

Progress IS addictive, right? Also, thats awesome that you set specific goals. Gives you something to visualize and work for. Even if you don't meet it, you'll be bigger by year's end and won't want to quit anyway. Good luck.

it is actually not recommended to work out the same area every day... you should work out an area every other day, at most... this gives your muscles time to recover and gain strength

Dont listen to this guy. Not to sound like a dick but seriously, if your gonna give advice give ir right.

First of all it took you 3-4 years to gain 20lbs??? I could gain that in a 2 months without much excess of fat with a PROPER diet and workout. You see how I caps PROPER, meaning 3 meals a day just wont cut it buddy. If you want to gain weight and basically muscle your gonna have to make FAT your friend. "just because its your friend doesnt mean you have to marry it." Meaning youll lose it once you reach your goal. Slowly build up eating 200 calories more a week until you reach a consistent calorie intake of about 3000-4000 a day depending of age.

Also eat about 6-8 smaller meals a day which causes your body to digest the nutrients and all the things like carbs and proteins and fat better then if you eat 3 meals of 1000 calories, making it 6 meals of 500 calories. Make protein your best friend, try consuming around 300-400 grams of protein a day (also depending age and weight). Though remember, dont expect to gain alot of weight fast without adding some bodyfat. Also fats are good (the healthy ones such as peanut butter and milk ans some meats and chicken, no not the cookies and soda and mcdonalds milkshakes) Fat and carbs both help the body digest the protein. Do not stop from your diet meaning dont eat chips and sodas and pizzas on sunday, basically its a waste of a week. Unless you want to gain a SH*T LOAD of weight consisting of a SH*T LOAD of fat, go do so.

Do low reps and about 6-12 sets depending of muscles. Try staying away from machines, use free weights. Eat carbs around your workout and try eating some whey protein post workout. Just follow it and you should do good. if yopu have any questions feel free to post.
