Exhaust Question

If I get an exhaust for the KA, say an Apex'i N1 or an HKS Power one, can I put it on the SR after the swap?

YES do a search first.the reason why is b/c when you get an exhaust its most likely going to be for the SR anyways

cat-back exhausts dont have anything to do with ur engine....as they come after the cat converter
do a little bit of research on exhausts, theres gota be lots of info out there on where they connect and shit liek that, diffrent kinds of pipes and shit
there arecheaper alternatives for to get apexi or hks shit
have a shop make ur pipes and get a muffler of your choice,, a apexi muffler if u would lik,e cuz u can have a shop make mandrel bended pipes for u ( search on what this stuff is!!) u will change ur mind very quickly

i had a freiend got his shit made for like 120$, but it was press bended but its all good not much of a diffrence
but u cant really estimate on expenses from the cheapest know what i mean?

heres my thinking on custom exhaust. There is a science to it really and to keep it straight, the big companies put a lot of r&d to have an exhaust system to give the most gains, after all they want everyone to buy theirs not the next companies. Mandrel bend adds like 5hp on a N/A car, its like having the piping 1/2 inch bigger then with a crush bent setup as far as ability to flow air.
Your paying to mod your car, your paying for more power. Why not just pay to get it right and get the most power you can from that area. If not why even bother modding it in the first place?
its much better to buy GOOD expensive parts, so what if it takes u longer to save up, in the end u make more power and have a better car.

Yeah, I'd rather buy an HKS exhaust and have it last then the cheap ass no name shit and have it rust out or something in a month.

It depends, I have had very good results from having my local muffler shop bend my pipe and weld on a muffler of my choice...My cat back cost me $40 for the pipe & labor and another $50 for my sweet Chrome Muffler...$23 for my intake and I got very impressive gains for not much jack! $$$
So while some like the brand name stuff (I might if I went with a Turbo) for a stock KA24DE, I like my choice just fine...:)

Well if I buy an exhaust for a KA then I want it to last so I can put it the SR.
The no name ones are all those things on like nopi.com or something they don't seem to have a name, but anyways, by no name I meant not one of the more popular brands, something that hasn't proven itself yet.

Well exhaust isn't rocket science...SS exhausts are nice if you plan of keeping the car for life though.

Actually, exhaust systems are very complicated and scientific, people spend alot of time and money in labs and stuff testing for optimal performance and sound (quiet or loud). It's practically rocket science.

The science behind exhaust is backpressure, sound, and restriction which can cause backpressure. Tubing diameter is porportional to backpressure. Backpressure is good for torque but bad for high rpm power. It all depends on what the flow rate is for your engine and where you want to make power. All the technology in exhausts is based on trial and error. The straightest possible system is best because turns make restriction. This is where mandrel bending comes in. Sound suppression is basically either straight through mufflers or baffles. Apexi, greddy, and HKS just to name a few are all straight throughs. Flowmaster is an example of a baffle system. A series of walls inside the muffler make the sound waves collide and cancel out, but there is no restriction. Just a little lesson for you. You decide, but if I were to buy an exhaust all over again, I would have a shop do it and pick a muffler.

eh local shop did mine except i have no cat instead i have a cat bypass pipe that make my car back fire sometimes when i shift gears, all connected to a n1 muffler and it works for me gave me tons of power.

I agree w/nissanfanatic and logik23 that there is much science to exhasts. My question is whether trying to use one exhaust for both KA and SR is a good idea performance wise. They are 2 different engines (na vs turbo) so I'd think that trying to use one muffler wouldn't get you the best performance.
I'm interested too b/c I have the same dilema as logik23 in that I have KA now, but don't know what I want to do engine wise (sr,rb,ca,kat) in the future.

every car backfires. Its just that now you don't have the amount of sound suppression material you had before.

I bought an Apexi and it works pretty well on the KA. Get something cheap if you are not sure or wait until you finish the engine setup.

Backfires occur because unburnt fuel remains in the combustion chaimber due the fact that the throttle body is closed. This causes a lack of air. When the combustion chaimber draws enough air past the throttle blade, it causes a large explosion because of the larger than normal amount of fuel. The cat only took away some of the sound suppression and maybe made for a little better flow. Your car back fired before, you just couldn't hear it.

my car has audible back fires right now, but thats cuz there are gaps at every joint, such as from the piping to the cat. also, i dont really have a muffler right now, so it backfires like a son of a bitch sometimes, freaks me out

I think all big name exhaust for the 240SX (JIC, HKS, Blitz, Apex'i, etc.) we're made to fit the SR and coincidentally, they fit the KA.
