i'm looking to buy an 83 cobra gt t-top shell from an autowreckers to rebuild, but the guy says that it's got a posi rear end in it and (unless i pay a pile of money) he'll sell me the car for $100 without the rear end. the car has no engine in it, but is setup for a v8. my question is this: if i get this car, can i only replace it with another posi rear end, or can i use any rear end from another 79-93 mustang? and can it be from a 4 cylinder, v6, or only another v8? thanks for all help...

There is no such thing as an 83 Cobra. Next cause someone else will say this(Craig). Posi is just a name given to a LSD by GM, your Ford rear-end would have Trac-Lok not Posi-drive which are both LSDs.
Next an 83 GT would have a 7.5" rear-end with a Trac-Lok LSD in it. This rear-end is not worth much at all. Also you can turn around and buy an 8.8" rear-end with Trac-lok from a junkyard for average $150 and put it in an 83 GT no problem.

LOL, your taking after me now.
If you can find an old T-Bird Turbo coupe, use the rear end from that. It will have rear disk and either 3.55's, manual tranny, or 3.73's auto tranny.

My brother had a 76 cobra, but I think they actually called them King Cobras. Don't know if there were other cobras, (other years) from that body style or not.
BTW, what happened to your tail light?
