Timing setting

Please help. I replaced the timing belt but now am trying to get the timing set correctly. We initially put it at TDC but the automatic transmission had trouble shifting. Can someone tell us where to set the timing on my '86 Escort (1.9 engine, 2bbl. carb.)? Is there any trick to setting it without a timing light???
