I am a severely twisted, slightly demented brain stuffed into a ogre like body.

I am Jay and I am at AF.

(Which is a little weird considering AF is a computer database sitting in a server in Florida or somewhere, and I'm in California... :right: )

It always shows New York or something like that.

But sometimes I am confused on who I am.

You know what? This is probably the toughest question I have ever read and tried to tackle at AF (good one, marc). Trying to answer that always means turning to the tangible physical activities you do or feel to try and define one's self. But this is the bogus bullshit way we are taught to try and put things into perspective.

I have an older friend (I think he's in his late 60's) who is a violin player. He went to a shrink for a long time, who would always ask him "who are you?", to which Michael would always respond "I'm a violinist." His shrink would always say "no." We are never taught that who we are is not how we look, what we do for a living, but rather in truth is defined by our thoughts, who we are inside our heads. Therefore, who you are cannot be answered with a few mere words or a brief description. You can only identify "it" with a name. Beyond that, I'd say who anybody is can be best defined by opinions, levels of passion, and thought patterns.

So to try and answer that question, for me, is something I am going to call impossible for the time being  (how you like them apples?!?! :finger: )

mark49, i want you to know that i just happened to be browsing AF for the first time tonight and i felt compelled to respond to your post, which involved registering with AF solely for that purpose. so if any of you have a problem with what i have to say, then tuff shit, you may as well keep it to yourselvs cos the chances of me ever returning to this site are somewhere between 0 and 0 (as fine a site and all as it is! my complements to the management)

i have to tell you im fuckin disgraced to read the answers to your post, it would seem to any observer that all you grease monkeys share the same brain (cell), i mean isnt there at least one of you with an original idea. i notice that at least one of you refrained from the standard "ME" answer, but then went on to tell us that he has an older friend in therapy for years (oh you lucky bastard, we should be all so fortunate to have such fucked up friends), and then went on to completly cop out of the question (shit man i cant answer that cos...uh... that would involve thinking!) now i dont mean to pick on you (with the psycho ould gieser for a buddy) cos at least you comprehend (ish?) the severity of the question, but for the rest of you let me just tell you that i to am a grease monkey myself (no thats not my final answer) but that doesnt stop me from appriciating the fact that "who am i" is quite possibly one of the most important questions ever!!!!!!!!!

now i could go on for an age explaining who i am but the fact of the matter is that there are levels of consciousness which are more inclusive then this present stage of "rational mentality" (which im going out on a limb assuming that all of you posess??), and its only from these higher stages of being that one can experience and appriciate their highest selves. but theres a catch (isnt there always) and here it is.
what one experiences as their highest potential cannot under any circumstances be articulated efficiently in words (to someone who hasnt already experienced it personally!), because words are from a level of consciousness much lower than that which you are trying to discribe and therefor the words that we have simply dont cover it, nor is there any point in making up new words to discribe it to others cos the only way we know what words mean is by association for example im trying to explain to you that "tree" means "a tree" (ie, big brown thing with lots ot little green things on it) all i do is point at a tree and repeat tree tree tree and eventually you get it, however when i try to discribe who i am at my core i have nothing physical to point at for you to make the association.
so all i can do is tell you the things you need to do to enable you to experience it for yourself, AH! i hear you say "but the question was "Who are you?" not who am i" but i tell you now that if any of you were dedicated enough to follow the practice to its goal you would experience first hand that we are the same, and i dont mean similar, i mean the same, you and i are one!

the only proven reliable method for experiencing this profound truth is about twenty years of meditation (if your lucky)
however their are easier but less reliable ways, eg Magic Mushrooms and LSD but only if its taken with a view towards spiritual enlightenment (if you do it just for a laugh, then thats all its gonna be), what you experience this way will only be temperary but often so profound that one tends to go the route of meditation afterwards, or possibly end in prison/drug addiction clinic.

now im guessing that mabey two of you (yes that includes you with the geriatric mental case friend) will bother to read this whole post and to you both i hope that what i say will at least stir the inquisitive gene in you enough to start doing your own research, cos thats what holds the most weight for everyone.
ill leave you with a couple of sites you might want to check out just to get you started.

im not sure if the above are @ .com or what so youll have to find them.
and so without further adue i leave you with this answer/statement

i have a body---i am not my body!
i have instinks---i am not my instinks!
i have emotions---i am not my emotions!
i have thoughts---i am not my thoughts!
i have social roles, son, brother, friend, mechanic, etc---i am not my social roles!
i am Atmann, the spark of divine in all of us, on a quest to realise Brahman, the ineffable ground of all being!
as are we all!!

best of luck Mark49, i sure hope you were seriour about that question.

I know that I am I. But do you know who you are?

it's a matter of perspective. to most of you i'm just some name, to my friends i'm a companion, to my dog i'm a master, to my cat i'm a servant(damn cats) to business owners i'm a customer and so on. to me i'm just a car lovin, blunt smokin dude with lots of free time and nothing to fill it with.

A poem on the subject. This is from "Cowboy Bebop".

Good morning, me. Did you sleep well? And did you wake up well?
Does the light and the wind, the air and the smell, all feel brand new?
Is each and every cell in your body awake now?
Today, you are who you are today.
You are a newer version of me. Myself ten years from now...
That's so far away for me that I can't even begin to imagine
Am I alone? Or is there a wonderful person next to me?
Well, knowing me, I'm sure I am troubling a lot of different people.
But that's all right. There's no problem. I will always be cheering you on.
And now for a big cheer... from the bottom of my heart.
Go! Go! Me, me, me! Do your best, do your best!
Me, me, me! Don't lose, don't lose! Me, me, me!
I am no longer here... But I'm here today, and I'll always be
cheering for you right here... Cheering for you, my only self.

I am a regualr guy, with a lot of issues, and a lot of insane thoughts going thru my head right now. In a nutshell, I just like having fun and browsing AF all night. Kind of a loser huh. I am a Honda fanatic, and I'm hoping to not be a newbit too much longer. I hate that word. Also, I think craigcully is a genius!

I am a collection of my experiances, emotions, morals, and opinions, I am much more than what you can see with your own eyes and more than I see when I look in the mirror. I am like no one else, sure I am the same decaying lifeform that everyone else is but nobody thinks, acts, or sees things the way I do. I am an individual.
