auto tranny should i swap ????

well i have a 96 gs non turbo i know i have the not so hot 420A engine but i want to make the best of what i do have even though i have an automatic tranny . would it be worth it to convert over to a 5spd or is there anything i can do to give me more lowend power???? any ideas???
