Problems with Theft Deterrent Module 94 Cutlass Supreme

I have a 94 Cutlass Supreme with a 3.4L. I have a problem which was intermittent until now. The car at various times would not start after being run/driven somewhere. Then if you waited a while, sometimes 15 minutes, sometimes a day or two; it would start and run without any problems. I don't like writing a book, but here goes...

Now, the car won't start. I have tried the second key, have checked the key (#9 resistance), bypassed the key check by placing the 3010 ohm resister in the ignition key harness connector. I have run checks on the theft deterrent relay, having power at A2. If I run a ground to the .8 yellow/black and place a test light on C-1 at the relay, I have been able to start and run the car. (but not reliably) I am able to turn the engine over, but it doesn't start normally. The security light comes on and stays for the proper 5 second interval.

The book says that I should check for a short between the fuel enable connector on the theft deterrent module (TDM) and the PCM. I found the TDM at the left side of the steering column, surrounded by a heavy metal enclosure. I am unable to disconnect the connector, as it is inside the enclosure. You can't trick the fuel enable signal to the PCM because it is a 5V digital modulated signal. First, can I pull that metal enclosure apart(no screws or bolts accessible) without any problems. Second, the service manual says that if there isn't a short, you may have to replace the TDM ($199)or the PCM (lots of $).

Any other suggestions as to where I might look in the car for the problem?

I finally disconnected the key connector underneath the dash and placed the 3000 ohm resistor in the connector going to the Theft Deterrent Module. I determined the key resistance required from the Service Manual (15 possibilities). The car starts and runs fine now. If anyone needs the key info, the GM Service Manual has it. However, if you worry about someone breaking that part of the Theft Deterrent system, please understand that it takes about 10 minutes apart from trying each resistance possibility. Something GM put into the Module to prevent quick and easy identification. Otherwise, you have to go to a GM Dealer and they have a key interrogator that they hook into the connector and it reads the key # from the car theft deterrent module and PCM.

Thank you for your posting. My son's Cuttlass coupe is having exactly the same symptoms as your car did. I do not have a service manual for the 95, and feel a little lost, but do not really want to have the car towed to the dealer for the theft system that I don't really want. Can the proper resistance be read from the key using a VOM?; and what colors are where is the connector going to the Theft Deterrent Module located? Did you leave the proper resister permanently attached across the wires going to the ignition switch?
