Casting resins: molding technique and tutorials

For quite a while now I'm thinking of doing some HM (Home-Made) resins. Although we have great tutorial here on AF written by Dag56, but I was looking some more techniques. I found this:

I used Dag's tutorial (and another one from a sculptor's website) to finally begin casting my own stuff. I got the Smooth-On Silicone Super Sampler set (under $30.00)

and was casting within days of receiving it. I'll take some pics of my molds and castings if anyone is interested, but it really is as simple as Dag makes it out to be. The only trick is making sure to throughly mix the rubber & resin and to make sure you don't lock your molds (multipiece only).

Since the Smooth-On is 1:1 for both the OOMOO 30 and the SmoothCast 300 no scales are necessary. All you need is the master or the talent to create one!

cast it. but why go through all the hassle, how
much better could you make the car in resin
as it is in diecast????

It's not really the matter of making it better. I would look on resins as making 'spare' resins/parts. That way you get more 'free space' for experimenting and don't get any headaches if you accidently destroy resin.

So far I've used it to make a mold of (and cast copies of) an electronic box, some wheels for my 1:43rd Bentley and Audi R8C, copied some BBS wheels and tires to replace the ones in the Revell C5R kits and made some copies of my somewhat-scratchbuilt 5 spoke Speedline's for my ongoing Ferrari F50 GT1 project.

So instead of destroying or having to buy (or have machined!) a set of wheels, or misc. parts, I can now simply create a copy and work on that, saving the master part from destruction!
