I had the same problem on a 96 but was able to get the alternator out by maneuvering it around the front axle and dropping it out. I believe it would have been a lot easier to get it out by removing the crankshaft pulley. I know it has right hand threads but, was unable to remove it with an impact wrench. Has anyone been able to remove the pulley, if so, how?????

This is a really old post, but I figure this information may help someone someday....

After fooling with the alternator for awhile, it came out of my brother-in-laws DOHC 3.0 v6 from the bottom to the right of the CV shaft, upside-down. You have to a) give the power cable slack by removing the bolt on the power steering reservoir that holds it in place (the power cable is wrapped in a black plastic cover) and various other clips b) pop off part of the black plastic cover in the wheel well.

BTW...its almost impossible to remove the top bolt w/o an 18mm speed wrench (ratcheting box end wrench)

pay close attention to how it came out because you have put back the same way....start by bolting the power cable back on with it resting near the brake rotor, flip it so its upside down with the pully facing you and work it back in. when you are done make sure you work the power cable back to its natural position before you bolt it in place and don't forget to reinstall the small plug

another tip.. you have to push down with your fingers the ribs in the cv boot as you work it back in to allow it to "ride" back into place...and pray alot.

i hope this helps someone

Ok, there is more....

The top bolt has to be inserted into the top hole while the alternator is still loose...that is...after you sort of get into place, stop, wiggle so you have a clear view of the hole from under the hood, and then insert the bolt. Once you have that done, let is hang loose in the alternator and start with the bottom bolt. I actually put tightend the middle bolt last.

I found three things out the hard way; two of which I blame on the Chiltons Manual for this car:

1) The manual says "remove the alternator" and "place the alternator into position" for the DOHC 3.0 as the procedure. That's like saying "start college" and "end college" and not mentioning the 4 years in the middle.

2) The PS pump pully is plastic and does not like to be bumped with the belt tensioner wrench (it chipped. what a pain in the butt). My bad. :banghead:

3) The Chiltons manual states that the PS pump hose is "left thread" (Item 1, Figure 88). Its not, its a standard thread...I have a mangeled hose to prove it.

Yep I couldn't agree more. The chiltons/haynes manual for the Taurus is a waste of time (literally and figuratively  ). Best to either use the Alldata service or buy the Ford service manual. We got ours on e-bay for 15 bucks

alldatadiy sez you have to drop the engine. I've done that on my 1998 Taurus with the 24V V-6. Still can't get the alternator out.

Gonna try removing the crankshaft pulley tomorrow. Warnings at alldatadiy say you have to lock up the flywheel, and that if you turn the crankshaft counter-clockwise in the process of removing or re-installing the pulley, it could do some major damage.

remove the strut and whole wheel asy losen the tension of belt its best to use long handle ratchet to get to tensioner remove half shaft with pry bar between tran and shaft or use a pcs of wood and give it a wack with hammer u can get to all the alt bolt from bottem drop alt out the bottem instale top bolt first on instale yes it is a pain in butt you might think of changing the belt while your in there

This video show you how to do it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0_e6QRBf5Uo Did anybody notice that there was a pigtail plug on the plug connected to the alternator? I might have accidentally ripped it off when removing the alternator. I just can't see where it should connect to. Any ideas?

I'm going to add to this old post. Just changed out the alternator following a video I saw on You Tube. Took a total of 4 hours and was extremely maddening but doable. Getting to those 18mm nuts was next to impossible so added two 13mm bolts to the end, tightened then together and then was able to use a ratcheting wrench to undo the top bolt rather quickly. You do have to flip the alternator so the pulley faces the engine and then you can ease it out between the CV joint and the crank pulley. Thanks Ford for another faboulous design feature!! I'm going to go put some ice on my knuckles:screwy:
