Tech Question #92850912

Hey forumeers. I'm not the most experienced when it comes to automotive tech stuff, but I've had my 1989 RS Camaro for about 6 years now, and thanks to some trustworthy people, I've been able to put some work into it. Anyway, my question is about exhaust. I had the engine from a 1978 Camaro put in about two years ago, and I'm pretty happy with it, but the power lust is catching up again. =) I'm looking to get some headers put on, and was wondering if it was unheard of to get headers that are uncappable from inside the car (by means of a switch or some such). I use my car on a daily basis (as opposed to a track), so if I were ever going to make use of headers, I can't see myself getting out at a stoplight with a ratchet... Furthermore, apparently due to the custom engine job, a custom exhaust pipe was needed to bypass the oil pan. I'm not sure what this means exactly, but a while ago when I went to have some dual exhaust put on, the shop I visited said there 'wasn't enough room'. Is this a common problem in Camaros? If the headers idea doesn't work out, I'd like to think I could still get dual. Anyone who can shed some light on this little dilemma, I would be most appreciative. And don't worry about going over my head... I can always have someone translate, heh heh.

yea you can get a cable cut out, and about the not enough room thing, i dont think you had enough clearence between the chasis and the ground

and the cable cut out you rig up and put a little lever inside the car, kinda like a hood release, and about the dual setup, try running it on each far side of the car, right along each of the door lines, down the side of the car and come back in and over the drive shaft, you have to squeeze mufflers in there somewhere, so i would look into the little round ones, or some extremely thin mufflers

headers are a pain to install on a 3rd gen. dual exhaust can be done, but takes some precision work.
oh and ridge i was just noticing your sig, this wouldn't be the work of a sledge hammer would it....sorry couldn't resist.
and is that vasoline sitting on your rear hatch?...dont wanna know

Cable cut outs are lame wastes of time. Buy an electronic cut out with a switch that is clean and works no problem. As far as dual exhaust it is possible to run it but it will cost you a good buck to have a good shop bend you up a nice system. Your much better off going with a big single pipe, its cheaper and easier and can flow just as good.
