So I am about to buy myself a used car.
I have around $5000 to spend, I could go up to $8000.
I need to car to be able to do long distances and carry alot of stuff (it will be for moving be back and forth to college. Safety is key for me.
I'd like something with cruise control, AC, at least front wheel drive (if not 4), and good gas mileage. I drove a Volvo 240 for a while with 17 iles per gallon, and I can't afford to do that again (certainly not with gas prices at what they are now).
So I was thinking a Subaru Outback? But I really don't know.
Would love any advice I can get. Thanks!

An Outback would be an excellent choice for you! It suits all the needs you have and some. For some good info you should check out the site in my sig...

The Outback is good, but you have to decide if you really need AWD, because it adds weight and hurts gas mileage. If you don't mind that, it seems to be a great choice for you.

kman10587, I can understand where you're coming from with your AWD statement but AWD is useful in any case not just in bad driving conditions. Blueman might like skiing, camping, or another variable thing that an Outback could be very handy for :)
91300zxtt, the link you provided talks about only one aspect of what Blueman wants. He has a specific list of needs that not every $8000 car is going to provide. Do you think an Eclipse or an MR2 is going to be a good car to haul around stuff for college? If you post a vague question like the member did in the thread you listed in a site like this you'll have about 200 people arguing what the fastest car is for $8000, usually not what car best suits the person's needs

LiuBei: I know, I'm an AWD fan and a WRX fan. I'm just saying that since mileage seems to be important to him, FWD might be a better option.
