Radiator cooling fans

Ran my 96' Aurora for approx 45 minutes at idle.

Temperature got to 225 degrees, cooling fans did not come on.

Anyone know what the normal operation of these fans are & how I can

check to verify proper operation?

Seems a little hot. I would check the relay. Just follow the wire from the sending unit. Also the dexcool can sludge up and coat the sending unit. Do they come on when you turn on the A/C? They should. If they do then the sending unit and it wiring are suspect. Good luck

First, try to connect the radiator fan directly to the 12 volt power source (engine off :) ) to see if the radiator fan even works.

Radiator fan normaly has a relay and a fuse. Check both the inside of the vehicle and around the engine bay.

Thanks for the response. Yes, they do come on when the ac is turned on. So that eliminates the relay & fuses.

Checked with an Olds Service Mgr. he says the fans should not operate until the coolant temp. reaches 229 degrees ! I don't think I got the coolant that hot. I will test again by blocking the fresh air across the radiator. Thanks again.

I always heard around 220, however I did find an interesting fan testing trick that works on my 98.

Feel around the bottom of the coolant surge tank for the coolant level sensor and unplug it. This confuses the system and runs the fan whenever the ignition is on. This is extremely handy if you are overheating as well.

Please note that it will continue to run the fans if the car is just in the ON position w/o the fan running. So use it with caution.
