Getting your 95 scanned for free...

I just had some transmission work done on my 95. I'm broke now, but that's another matter.

I went to two different transmission shops and both did free transmission checks for potential customers. The first thing they did was slap a scan tool onto the car.

Since I haven't heard of any of the parts stores having a scan tool that'll do the 95's OBD I computer, this seems like a good way to get the codes scanned for free. Just tell them it's shifting hard and grill them about what it said.

Good deal ;)

I just wish we had AutoZones in Canada so I could get an OBDII scan for free :(

Jim you can get a OBD II scanner at Canadian Tire and Parts Source for around $230.00 dollars, however you can get them on sale if you wait for the right opportunity.

There are at least 2 parts store chains in town here that do it for free. Just go through the yellow pages and ask all of them. It beats $60 every time you ever see that damnable SES light.

Its software that is installed onto a laptop. I will find out for ya.

Basically to do an Autotap "run" and I have done this before...

1. Program the software to measure and calc. AFR, engine temp, coolant temp, knock retard, speed, rpm etc etc

2. Come to a complete stop
3. TC off, Power trans on, 2nd gear
4. Roll out, car shifts from 1 to 2
5. Accelerate to 3200 RPM
6. Introduce the pedal to the floor ;)
7. Drive til the PCM forces the tranny to shift to 3rd
8. Slow down

At the 2-3 shift the software does its thing...its very cool :D

We have Autozones in Northern California but they DO NOT do free scan here. I've heard they do that only in some Mid-western states, not sure about East.

In the midwest we can take out scanners on the tool loaner program. Michigan represent.

for code reading, you could always get the autoxray ezread 1000. They run around $130-150 if you order online.

what works on a 95 though? its the rare obdI with a obdII connector, and the idiots at parts stores always say I, and GM are wrong, its not obdI, its OBDII, but they dont know why it wont synch up, must be a "bad computer" lol....

I put the tranny shop deal on here to help others. I actually went and got my own a while back for my 95 thanks to long being frustrated by this.

I bought an actron cp9110 with a GM cartridge and got the GM OBD II cable directly from actron (CP9115), It works great. I picked up everything for about $110 or $120. I also happened to get a chrysler cartridge too. Just search for actron scan tool and actron 9110 on ebay. There always seems to be a couple. You can find the cable (and scan tools and stuff) at www.actron.com. Go to the garage sale link and look under test and tools I think.

On the plus side it is extremely easy to use. The only negatives I've found is that it doesn't quite pick up everything. My wheel speed sensors are bad and it picks up nothing from them. I recall that it claims to do engine, transmission, and something else (brakes?)...

I also heard of various snap ons and other more professional type scan tools working, but they are more along the lines of $500 instead of $100ish.

Go To Advance Auto NOT AutoZone .....They have the right tool to scan the 95 aurora BUT they won't be able to erase the codes...good luck
