Gas Tank

My gas tank has a leak and you smell the fumes.. The previous owner who had an amp in it drilled holes.. Whats the best way to fix it w/o spending 700.oo that i was quoted for.. Is it possible to seal w/o getting another tank put on or should i just get a used one from the junk yard and have it put on..

Get some good ol JB weld at your local parts store this stuff does wonders

junk yard is never a bad idea, besides the fact that you'll at least have to remove part of the exhaust system to get to it, possible more things. that would be a way of knowing that there is no hole. a patch isn't a bad idea either. i think the choice is time, a quick fix would be the patch, a longer but possibly more reliable choice would be a used tank from the junkyard

that or a two part epoxy, ive done that before too. make sure its able to stand up to the gasoline vapors and environment. the tank is plastic, so i have heard of them being melted shut, HOWEVER!! even with proper steps in draining, cleaning, airing, and prepairing the tank, it is still EXTREAMLY dangerous and may cause an explosion. the safest way to do this, if you are going to try and melt the holes shut, clean the tank thourghouly and fill the tank with running cold water, so there is no space for gas vapors to build up, and only then try to melt the holes shut. tricky part is trying to keep water from cooling the place youre melting. by running out of the hole. lol. that or you can always use duct tape :)

I had to rewire my friends butchered stereo system. The person, who I believe was his girlfriends brother did the exact same thing. Drilled holes to mount an amp and drilled right into the tank. I took epoxy and put in on the threads of some fat wood screws and screwed them right into holes. Sealed it up perfectly and it lasted 7 years until the car died. Nice, easy and cheap.
