My 96 1.9 runs fine but the check engine light stays on. Have disconed the battery but it comes back. I see on some of the threads that it is possible to read the fault codes. I have a Haynes Manual and can interpret them if I can just get the number. I have asked at the Tools rental places and at the automotive supply stores locally but they don't seem to have what I need. Any tips, pointers, recommends would be much appreciated.

Hi..I bought a code reader at Walmart CHEAP!.Works perfect.SIMPLE to use! Yes there are ways to retrieve MOST codes on MOST cars..WITHOUT code readers..by ways of turning the key on and off stuff..jumpers/bypass/grounding..you can even get the light to flash out the codes. This is in most service manuals..DETAILED..it is FULLY detailed in a couple of Ford specific manuals that I have.Wally has a Chiltons book for $18(Cdn) that tells/shows how to do it on PRETTY much anything with wheels..
ONE SLIP/MISTAKE..accidental/short..you know what happens.
The code reader was about $20/$25 Cdn.
The connector is REAL easy to find under the hood..it is mounted on a little metal pedestal..take it off that thing and you won't need the extension cable..and it will be SIMPLE to do..VERY easy to use and COMPRENSIVE manual..
