Motor Oil on top of trany

My Tracker is losing oil. Ever so often I have to add a quart of oil. There is a build up of oil on top of the trany right behind where you add oil to the engine. It looks wet too. What could be causing this? How much would it cost to fix?

Also what brand of high mileage oil should I use? What brand do you use?

it is either the valve cover gasket or the distributor gasket , i used castrol 20w-50 on my tracker it had 170k on it

Is 10w-30 okay? or should i switch to 20w-50. If so how come the thicker oil is better?

My tracker has 110k

10w30 is fine i used 20w50 because i had a couple of oil leaks and the thicker oil slows the leaks a little bit and plus my engine burned oil to

Supposedly the distributor gasket is notorious for leaking.

Hi

I've no idea. However i've had a lot of work done by the local high school auto mechanics class; they only charge for parts and a little for materials. Good luck.
