I have the same problem with the brake light not coming on so it won't shift out of park. I have done the neutral thing, but my brake lights don't work and that isn't so good. I keep calling people but I am a female and all they tell me is that it is the brake light switch, but I have seen it and know it is not that. I sautered it and it worked for a while but it has broken again and I just need to get a new piece, but I don't know what it is called and I can't find an answer. Can anyone help me? the piece is attached to the brake, it is black plastic. It has two blue pieces that each have two wires coming into them and the blue piece must combine to attach to the black piece within the blue piece. The wires on one box are purple and red/green and the wires coming into the other blue box are red/green and blue (i am pretty sure). The one problem may be that when the car was bought it was altered to put in a cruise control which does not work, so I am not sure exactly what they did to it and if it is different. The car is a 1997 Ford Taurus G. Thanks

Check your fuse for your brakes. It also controls power to your cruise. The location is in your owners manual

Brake Light switch.
If you say the same as you've written to the part's person at Ford, he will find it for you. Just be prepared for the dealer price.
