I have a 2000 4.3l 5spd. Is there a trick to getting the shift knob off? Thought it would be fun to swap out with something different.
Thanks

i think you have to remove the boot and unscrew the whole shift lever, have never remove just the top ball i think it is glued on

FYI. Getting just the shift knob off was a disaster. I had to hack it off with a chisel. Not to mention the shaft is too big for the "Universal" shift knobs. Dealer wanted $170 for an entire shift lever (couldn't find one in the local salvage yard). I inserted a piece of threaded rod (i guess it didn't need to be threaded) slightly smaller in diameter and gobs of epoxy into the shaft. Cut rod long enough to go all the way to bottom of shaft and up into the new knob but short enough so that the new knob collar was slightly over the shift lever. Turned out to be a solid feeling cob job and looks great. I can also swap it out again with ease. Only problem is that I know what's going on in there. I wouldn't recommend doing it again.
